Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method for removing mercury from a gas stream comprising contacting the gas stream with a getter composition comprising bromine, bromochloride, sulphur bromide, sulphur dichloride or sulphur monochloride and mixtures thereof. In one preferred embodiment the getter composition is adsorbed onto a sorbent. The sorbent may be selected from the group consisting of flyash, limestone, lime, calcium sulphate, calcium sulfite, activated carbon, charcoal, silicate, alumina and mixtures thereof. Preferred is flyash, activated carbon and silica.

Claims (11)

1. A method for removing mercury from a gas stream, comprising contacting the gas stream with a getter composition that oxidizes volatile or insoluble Hg to non-volatile or soluble Hg, wherein said getter composition comprises bromine, bromochloride, sulphur bromide, sulphur dichloride or sulphur monochloride and mixtures thereof, further comprises processing the gas stream treated with the getter composition in a wet scrubber, where the soluble Hg and other constituents of the gas stream are treated with aqueous solutions or slurries of calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and sodium hydroxide to remove the soluble Hg.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprises venting the gas stream processed in the wet scrubber.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the getter composition is bromochloride.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the getter composition is sulphur bromide.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the getter composition is sulphur dichloride or sulphur monochloride.

A method for removing mercury from a gas stream, comprising: contacting the gas stream with a getter composition that oxidizes volatile or insoluble mercury to non-volatile or soluble mercury, wherein the getter composition comprises bromine, bromochloride, sulphur bromide, sulphur dichloride, or sulphur monochloride and mixtures thereof and said getter composition is adsorbed onto a sorbent, wherein the sorbent is selected from the group consisting of limestone, lime, calcium sulfate, calcium sulfite, silicate, alumina, silica, activated carbon and mixtures thereof.

A method according to claim 6 , further comprises processing the gas stream treated with the getter composition in a wet scrubber, where the soluble Hg and other constituents of the gas stream are treated with aqueous solutions or slurries of calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and sodium hydroxide to remove the soluble Hg.

8. A method according to claim 7 , further comprises venting the gas stream processed in the wet scrubber.

9. A method according to claim 6 , wherein the sorbent is activated carbon.

A method for removing mercury from a gas stream, comprising: contacting the gas stream with a getter composition that oxidizes volatile or insoluble mercury to non-volatile or soluble mercury, wherein the getter composition comprises bromine, bromochloride, sulphur bromide, sulphur dichloride, or sulphur monochloride and mixtures thereof and said getter composition is adsorbed onto a sorbent, and wherein the sorbent is selected from the group consisting of carbonaceous materials, flyash and mixture thereof, further comprises processing the gas stream treated with the getter composition in a wet scrubber, where the soluble Hg and other constituents of the gas stream are treated with aqueous solutions or slurries of calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and sodium hydroxide to remove the soluble Hg.

11. A method according to claim 10 , further comprises venting the gas stream processed in the wet scrubber.
