Abstract

Provided are animal containment systems and components, including single-use animal containment cages and modular rack units. Also provided are methods for assembling and using components of the animal containment systems.

Claims (17)

1. A method for regulating airflow in a rodent containment system, comprising:

setting an air pressure set point using a user interface comprising an air pressure set point input function;

sensing air pressure by an air pressure sensor disposed in the system;

sending the air pressure signal directly to a controller; and

balancing output of an air supply fan, air exhaust fan, or air supply fan and air exhaust fan by increasing or decreasing fan speed via the controller until the air pressure signal substantially reaches the air pressure set point;

whereby airflow is regulated in the rodent containment system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rodent containment system comprises an air supply conduit and the air pressure sensor is in effective communication with the air supply conduit.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rodent containment system comprises an air exhaust conduit and the air pressure sensor is in effective communication with the air exhaust conduit.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rodent containment system includes a cage and the air pressure sensor is in effective communication with the cage.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the output of the air supply fan, the air exhaust fan, or the air supply fan and the air exhaust fan is balanced by increasing or decreasing fan speed via the controller until the air pressure signal reaches the air pressure set point.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising emitting an audible alarm that is activated when the air pressure signal deviates at a specified increment from the air pressure set point.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the increasing or decreasing the fan speed comprises delaying the increase or decrease of the fan speed after sending the air pressure signal to the controller, with an amount of the delay configured to prevent substantial swings in airflow.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the blower assembly comprises a mixing box configured to render airflow of an HVAC system substantially constant and further comprising removing exhaust air from the mixing box through a heating, ventilation or air conditioning HVAC system.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the air supply fan, the air exhaust fan, or the air supply fan and the air exhaust fan is in a blower assembly.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the blower assembly comprises two or more fans in series with a common flow direction with the air leaving one fan entering the intake of another fan and a fan motor separately driving each fan, and wherein the speed of the two or more fans in series is increased or decreased.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising monitoring fan speed signals during operation of the blower assembly.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising maintaining different fan speeds for the two or more fans of the blower assembly.
