Abstract

An ion radiation therapy machine provides a steerable beam for treating a tumor within the patient where the exposure spot of the beam is controlled in width and/or length to effect a flexible trade-off between treatment speed, accuracy, and uniformity.

Claims (20)

1. A method of ion therapy planning comprising the steps of:

(a) determining a dose plan with respect to a region of a patient;

(b) optimizing intensities and locations of a first set of beams having a first beam spot size to provide location and intensity values of the first set of beams to produce a first dose converging to the dose plan; and

(c) after step (b), optimizing intensities and locations of a second set of beams having a second beam spot size smaller than the first beam spot size to provide location and intensity values of a second set of beams to produce a second dose converging on portions of the dose plan not covered by the first dose, the first and second set of beams providing dose converging on the dose plan.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein step (b) iteratively modifies the intensities and locations of the first set of beams to provide the location and intensity values for the first set of beams; and step (c) iteratively modifies the intensities and locations of the second set of beams to provide the location and intensity values for the second set of beams.

3. The method of claim 1 further including the step of repeating step (c) with additional sets of beams having successively smaller beam sizes.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the beam spot sizes differ in axial extent along an axis of ion travel.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the beam spot sizes differ in lateral width perpendicular to an axis of ion travel.

6. The method of claim 1 further including the step of selecting beam locations based upon a gradient of the dose plan such that a Bragg peak of the beams are adjacent to high gradients of the dose plan.

7. The method of claim 1 further including the step of selecting beam locations based upon the dose plan such that a Bragg peak of the beams are adjacent to a distal edge of a treatment region in the dose plan.

8. An apparatus for ion therapy planning comprising a stored program executing on an electronic computer to execute the steps of:

(a) accept a dose plan with respect to a region of a patient;

(b) optimize intensities and locations of a first set of beams having a first beam spot size to provide location and intensity values of the first set of beams to produce a first dose converging to the dose plan; and

(c) after step (b), optimize intensities and locations of a second set of beams having a second beam spot size smaller than the first beam spot size to provide location and intensity values of a second set of beams to produce a second dose converging on portions of the dose plan not covered by the first dose, the first and second set of beams providing dose converging on the dose plan.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein step (b) iteratively modifies the intensities and locations of the first set of beams to provide the location and intensity values for the first set of beams; and step (c) iteratively modifies the intensities and locations of the second set of beams to provide the location and intensity values for the second set of beams.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 further including the step of repeating step (c) with additional sets of beams having successively smaller beam sizes.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 further wherein the beam spot sizes differ in axial extent along an axis of ion travel.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 further wherein the beam spot sizes differ in lateral width perpendicular to an axis of ion travel.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 further including the step of selecting beam locations based upon a gradient of the dose plan such that Bragg peaks of the beams are adjacent to high gradients of the dose plan.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 further including the step of selecting beam locations based upon the dose plan such that Bragg peaks of the beams are adjacent to a distal edge of a treatment region in the dose plan.
