Abstract

The invention relates to compositions and methods for inhibiting RNA binding proteins (e.g., MEX-3, MEX-5 and POS-1), as well as methods for treating and preventing disorders associated with parasitic infections and inflammatory disorders.

Claims (38)

1. A method for treating or preventing a parasitic associated state in a subject comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of compound E:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said parasitic associated state is treated or prevented, wherein compound E modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein selected from a group consisting of POS-1 and MEX-5.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said subject is a plant, an animal or a human.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said parasitic associated state is a parasitic infestation or parasitic re-infestation or a disease caused by a parasitic infestation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method includes protecting plants from a parasitic infestation, inhibiting embryogenesis in a parasite or in a subject suffering from a parasitic infestation, or reducing parasitic burden in soil, in plants or in an animal suffering from a parasitic infection.

5. The method of any one of claims 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 , wherein said parasite is a helminth.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said helminth is selected from the group consisting of a cestode, a trematode and a nematode.

7. A method for inhibiting embryogenesis in a parasite, comprising contacting said parasite with an effective amount of compound E:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said embryogenesis is inhibited, wherein compound E modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein selected from a group consisting of POS-1 and MEX-5.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the parasite is present in a subject.

9. The method of claim 7 or 8 , wherein said parasite is a helminth.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said helminth is selected from the group consisting of a cestode, a trematode and a nematode.

11. A method for treating or preventing an inflammatory disorder caused by a parasitic associated state in a subject comprising administering to said subject a therapeutically effective amount of compound E:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said inflammatory disorder is treated or prevented, wherein compound E modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein selected from a group consisting of POS-1 and MEX-5.

12. The method of claims 1 , 7 and 11 , wherein the RNA binding protein is required for embryogenesis.

13. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of compound E:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein compound E modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein selected from a group consisting of POS-1 and MEX-5.

14. A composition comprising a pesticidally effective amount of compound E:

and an agronomically acceptable carrier, wherein compound E modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein selected from a group consisting of POS-1 and MEX-5.

15. A method for treating or preventing a parasitic associated state in a subject comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of compound DI:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said parasitic associate state is treated or prevented, wherein compound DI modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein POS-1.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said subject is a plant, an animal or a human.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said parasitic associated state is a parasitic infestation or parasitic re-infestation or a disease cause by a parasitic infestation.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein said method includes protecting plants from a parasitic infestation, inhibiting embryogenesis in a parasite or in a subject suffering from a parasitic infestation, or reducing parasitic burden in soil, in plants or in an animal suffering from parasitic infection.

19. The method of any one of claims 15 - 18 , wherein said parasite is a helminth.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said helminth is selected from the group consisting of a cestode, a trematode and a nematode.

21. A method for inhibiting embryogenesis in a parasite, comprising contacting said parasite with an effective amount of compound DI:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said embryogenesis is inhibited, wherein compound DI modulates binding activity of an RNA binding protein POS-1.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the parasite is present in a subject.

23. The method of claim 21 or 22 , wherein said parasite is a helminth.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein said helminth is selected from the group consisting of a cestode, a trematode and a nematode.

25. A method for treating or preventing an inflammatory disorder caused by a parasitic associated state in a subject comprising administering to said subject a therapeutically effective amount of compound DI:

or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such that said inflammatory disorder is treated or prevented, wherein compound DI modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein POS-1.

26. The method of claims 15 , 21 and 25 , wherein the RNA binding protein is required for embryogenesis.

27. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of compound DI:

or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein compound DI modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein POS-1.

28. A composition comprising a pesticidally effective amount of compound DI:

and an agronomically acceptable carrier, wherein compound DI modulates the RNA binding activity of an RNA binding protein POS-1.
