Abstract

A motor vehicle operator interface and control algorithm convey diesel particulate filter regeneration status to the operator. The algorithm also allows new control over heretofore automatic regeneration, through limiting the inhibit function. The DPF after-treatment operator interface provides multiple status indications to the operator. In a preferred embodiment this is effected using a switched indicator lamp.

Claims (14)

1. A method of implementing regeneration cycles for a diesel particulate filter for a diesel engine with limited operator control over regeneration cycle occurrence, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an ignition switch;

providing an operator actuated forced regeneration input;

providing an operator actuated regeneration inhibit input;

providing visual display indications;

responsive to turning the engine ignition switch on and start of the diesel engine, entering a state of automatic control by an engine controller over regeneration where regeneration cycles occur in response to indication of need;

responsive to regeneration being off during the state of automatic control, causing the visual display indications to indicate regeneration is off;

from the state of automatic control, responsive to an operator request for regeneration and a status indication from the engine controller that regeneration is allowed, indicating a need for diesel particulate filter regeneration and causing the visual display to indicate that regeneration of the diesel particulate filter is needed;

responsive to indication that regeneration is needed and to indication from the engine controller that all regeneration interlocks have been met, initiating regeneration and causing the visual display to indicate regeneration;

responsive to operator actuation of the regeneration inhibit input from either the state of automatic control or state of regeneration resulting from an operator request, inhibiting regeneration and causing the display to indicate a delay state; and

responsive to indication that regeneration has completed, ceasing regeneration, causing the visual display to resume indication of the off state and, if regeneration occurred under an operator request, returning to the state of automatic control.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

responsive to transition of the ignition switch from off to on, causing the visual display to indicate that regeneration is not inhibited by operator action; and

responsive to operator actuation of the inhibit switch, implementing a delay and after expiration of the delay and with no further change in condition, causing the visual display to indicate inhibition of regeneration.
