Compounds, compositions, and methods for protecting brain health in neurodegenerative disorders
Aspects of the invention relate to compounds, extracts and compositions thereof, and methods of using of the same, to treat neurodegenerative disorders and/or improve brain health. In certain embodiments, said compounds are pomegranate flavonoids.
1. A method for treating dementia or Alzheimer's disease, comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of punicalin or punicalagin, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is between about 250 mg and about 1,000 mg per day, thereby treating dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the punicalin or punicalagin is administered as part of a nutraceutical composition, pharmaceutical composition, functional food, functional nutrition product, medical food, medical nutrition product, dietary supplement or botanical drug.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein Alzheimer's disease is treated.
5. The method of claim 3 , wherein dementia is treated.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said dementia is age-related.
7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the memory of the human is improved.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the memory is long-term memory.
9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the memory is short-term memory.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount is between about 250 mg and about 500 mg per day.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount is between about 500 mg and about 750 mg per day.
12. The method of claim 3 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
13. The method of claim 4 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
14. The method of claim 5 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
15. The method of claim 6 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
16. The method of claim 4 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
17. The method of claim 5 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
18. The method of claim 1 , wherein Alzheimer's disease is treated.
19. The method of claim 1 , wherein dementia is treated.
20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said dementia is age-related.
21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the memory of the mammal is improved.
22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the memory is long-term memory.
23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the memory is short-term memory.
24. The method of claim 18 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
25. The method of claim 19 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
26. The method of claim 18 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
27. The method of claim 19 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
28. A method for treating dementia or Alzheimer's disease, comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of punicalin or punicalagin, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is between about 50 mg and about 250 mg per day, thereby treating dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the punicalin or punicalagin is administered as part of a nutraceutical composition, pharmaceutical composition, functional food, functional nutrition product, medical food, medical nutrition product, dietary supplement or botanical drug.
30. The method of claim 28 , wherein the mammal is a human.
31. The method of claim 30 , wherein Alzheimer's disease is treated.
32. The method of claim 30 , wherein dementia is treated.
33. The method of claim 32 , wherein said dementia is age-related.
34. The method of claim 30 , wherein the memory of the human is improved.
35. The method of claim 34 , wherein the memory is long-term memory.
36. The method of claim 34 , wherein the memory is short-term memory.
37. The method of claim 30 , wherein punicalin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.

40. The method of claim 30 , wherein punicalagin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered.
