Abstract

In various exemplary embodiments described herein, a system and associated method to intelligently and automatically select compatible communication protocols between one or more communications networks is disclosed. The system can include an application engine configured to couple to at least a first one of the one or more communications networks and receive a sample of an attempted communication from a first end-point. The first end-point is a telephonic device attempting to initiate communications with a second end-point. The second end-point is also a telephonic device. The application engine includes a decoder engine to determine a first protocol associated with the first end-point and a second protocol associated with the second end-point. A protocol conversion engine is configured to convert the first protocol to be compatible with at least a second one of the one or more networks associated with the second protocol.

Claims (32)

1 . A network architecture to select automatically a compatible communication protocol between communications networks, the network architecture comprising:

an application engine, using one or more processors, configured to couple to at least a first communication network of the communications networks and to receive a sample of an attempted communication from a first end-point to a second end-point, the application engine including:

a decoder engine configured to determine a first protocol supported by the first end-point; and

a protocol conversion engine configured to convert the first protocol to be compatible with at least a second communications network associated with a second protocol supported by the second end-point.

2 . The network architecture of claim 1 , wherein the decoder engine is further configured to determine the second protocol supported by the second end-point.

3 . The network architecture of claim 1 , wherein the decoder engine is further configured to detect an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication.

4 . The network architecture of claim 1 , wherein the protocol conversion engine is further configured to convert an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication to be compatible with the second communications network.

5 . The network architecture of claim 1 , wherein the protocol conversion engine is further configured to encapsulate a payload of the attempted communication of the first end-point within the second protocol supported by the second end-point to be compatible with the second communications network.

6 . The network architecture of claim 1 , wherein the protocol conversion engine is further configured to make a determination that a firewall is associated with the second communications network, and based on the determination that the firewall is associated with the second communications network, the protocol conversion engine is further configured to convert an underlying protocol of the attempted communication to traverse the firewall.

7 . The network architecture of claim 1 , further comprising an application programming interface configured to allow communication between a browser and the protocol conversion engine.

8 . A conversion method of automatically selecting compatible communication protocols between communications networks, the method comprising:

receiving a sample of an attempted communication from a first end-point to a second end-point;

determining a first protocol associated with the first end-point; and

converting the first protocol to be compatible with a first communications network that supports a second protocol.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining the second protocol associated with the second end-point.

10 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising detecting an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication.

11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising converting an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication of the first end-point to be compatible with a second communications network.

12 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising encapsulating a payload of the attempted communication of the first end-point within the second protocol associated with the second end-point to be compatible with the second communications network.

13 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

making a determination that a firewall is associated with a second communications network that may block the attempted communication from the first end-point; and

based on the determination that the firewall is associated with the second communications network, converting an underlying protocol of the attempted communication to traverse the firewall.

14 . A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method of automatically selecting compatible communication protocols between communications networks, the method comprising:

receiving a sample of an attempted communication from a first end-point to a second end-point;

determining a first protocol associated with the first end-point; and

converting the first protocol to be compatible with at least a second communications network associated with a second protocol supported by the second end-point.

15 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises determining the second protocol supported by the second end-point.

16 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises detecting an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication.

17 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises converting an underlying transport layer of the attempted communication of the first end-point to be compatible with the second communications network.

18 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises encapsulating a payload of the attempted communication of the first end-point within the second protocol associated with the second end-point to be compatible with the second communications network.

19 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises:

making a determination that a firewall is associated with the second communications network; and

based on the determination that the firewall is associated with the second communications network, converting an underlying protocol of the attempted communication to traverse the firewall.
