Abstract

A drive gear for a generally cylindrical imaging component. The drive gear includes a body for engaging the generally cylindrical imaging component; a cylindrical shaft attached to the body, the cylindrical shaft having an end surface; and three prongs extending longitudinally outward from the end surface. Each prong may include an extension member extending perpendicular to the prongs and the cross-sectional area of the extension members may be less than the cross-sectional area of the prongs.

Claims (29)

1. A drive gear for a generally cylindrical imaging component, the drive gear comprising:

a body for engaging the generally cylindrical imaging component;

a cylindrical shaft attached to the body, the cylindrical shaft having an end surface, the end surface having sides that extend perpendicular from the end surface; and

three prongs extending longitudinally outward from the end surface and having a top surface, each prong including an extension member extending perpendicular to at least one side of the sides of the prongs,

wherein each of the three prongs has a generally triangular shape and each top surface does not directly contact each of the other top surfaces,

wherein the cross-sectional area of the extension members, measured perpendicular to a shaft axis, is less than the cross-sectional area of the prongs, measured perpendicular to the shaft axis.

2. The drive gear of claim 1 wherein each of the three prongs is generally triangular in shape, one vertex of each triangular shaped prong being generally rounded.

3. The drive gear of claim 1 wherein the three prongs are adapted for engaging a helical recess.

4. An apparatus comprising:

a drive gear for a generally cylindrical imaging component, the drive gear comprising a body for engaging a first end of the generally cylindrical imaging component;

a cylindrical shaft attached to the body, the cylindrical shaft having an end surface, the end surface having sides that extend perpendicular from the end surface; and

three prongs extending longitudinally outward from the end surface and having a top surface, wherein each prong has a generally triangular shape and each top surface does not directly contact each of the other top surfaces, each prong including an extension member extending perpendicular to at least one side of the sides of the prongs, wherein the cross-sectional area of the extension members, perpendicular to a shaft axis, is less than the cross-sectional area of the prongs, perpendicular to a shaft axis; and

a non-drive gear for engaging a second end of the generally cylindrical imaging component adapted for reducing an amount of side-to-side movement of the generally cylindrical imaging component.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each of the three prongs is generally triangular in shape, one vertex of each triangular shaped prong being generally rounded.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the three prongs are adapted for engaging a helical recess.

7. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface at a generally 90 degree angle.

8. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface generally parallel to the shaft axis.

9. The drive gear of claim 1 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface at a generally 90 degree angle.

10. The drive gear of claim 1 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface generally parallel to the shaft axis.

11. The drive gear of claim 1 wherein at least two sides of each prong are substantially straight without a twist.

12. A drive gear for a generally cylindrical imaging component, the drive gear comprising:

a body for engaging the generally cylindrical imaging component;

a cylindrical shaft attached to the body, the cylindrical shaft having an end surface; and

three prongs extending longitudinally outward from the end surface, wherein each of the three prongs has a top surface that does not directly contact each of the other top surfaces, wherein each of the three prongs is generally triangular in shape, one vertex of each triangular shaped prong being generally rounded, and wherein at least one side of each prong is substantially planar and at least another side of each prong has a substantially planar portion and a non-planar portion.

13. The drive gear of claim 12 wherein the three prongs are adapted for engaging a helical recess.

14. The drive gear of claim 13 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface generally parallel to the shaft axis.

15. The drive gear of claim 12 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface at a generally 90 degree angle.

16. The drive gear of claim 12 wherein each of the three prongs extends from the end surface generally parallel to the shaft axis.

17. The drive gear of claim 12 wherein at least two sides of each prong are substantially straight without a twist.
