Abstract

The Fiber Channel standard was created by the American National Standard for Information Systems (ANSI) X3T11 task group to define a serial I/O channel for interconnecting a number of heterogeneous peripheral devices to computer systems as well as interconnecting the computer systems themselves through optical fiber and copper media at gigabit speeds (i.e., one billion bits per second). Multiple protocols such as SCSI (Small Computer Serial Interface), IP (Internet Protocol), HIPPI, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) among others can concurrently utilize the same media when mapped over Fiber Channel. A Fiber Channel Fabric is an entity which transmits Fiber Channel frames between connected Node Ports. The Fiber Channel fabric routes the frames based on the destination address as well as other information embedded in the Fiber Channel frame header. Node Ports are attached to the Fiber Channel Fabric through links.

Claims (25)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a switch core,

a Fibre Channel link,

port logic coupled to said switch core and said Fibre Channel link,

the port logic comprising a state machine, configured to analyze a fink speed of the Fibre Channel link, wherein the state machine has a plurality of modes of operation including:

a first mode of operation in which the state machine is idle and monitors for signals,

a second mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal indicating a Fibre Channel frame is currently being received from the Fibre Channel link, in which the controller reads in a portion of the frame into a register,

a third mode of operation, responsive to detecting that enough of the Fibre Channel frame has been received to determine a route for the frame,

a fourth mode of operation, invoked based on the link speed of the Fibre Channel link, responsive to the signal to wait until more of the frame has been received.

2. The apparatus in claim 1 wherein the state machine also comprises another mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal to reject the Fibre Channel frame, asserts a signal to logic to build the Fibre Channel Fabric Frame Reject Frame.

3. The apparatus in claim 1 wherein the state machine also comprises another mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal to return a Fabric Busy frame, asserts a signal to logic to build the Fibre Channel Fabric Busy Frame.

4. The apparatus in claim 1 wherein the state machine also comprises another mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal to route the frame, asserts a signal to receive the frame and monitors the frame for an End of Frame (EOF) delimiter.

5. The apparatus in claim 4 wherein the state machine also comprises another mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal that an End of Frame (EOF) delimiter has been received, asserts a signal to disconnect the route.

6. The apparatus in claim 4 wherein the state machine also comprises another mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal that an End of Frame (EOF) delimiter has been received, asserts a signal to increment at least a frame counter.

7. The apparatus in claim 6 wherein one of the frame counters includes a buffer credit counter.

8. An apparatus comprising:

a switch core,

a Fibre Channel link,

a route determination apparatus,

port logic coupled to said switch core, said Fibre Channel link, and said route determination apparatus,

the port logic comprising a state machine, configured to analyze a link speed of the Fibre Channel link, wherein the state machine has a plurality of modes of operation including:

a first mode of operation in which the state machine is idle and monitors for signals,

a second mode of operation, responsive to detecting a signal indicating to build a route request,

a third mode of operation, responsive to detecting that a route response was received front the route determination apparatus,

a fourth mode of operation, invoked based on the link speed of the Fibre Channel link, responsive to receiving the complete route response data from the route determination apparatus.
