Navigation Queries
A computer-implemented method includes receiving at a computer server system, from a computing device that is remote from the server system, a string of text that comprises a search query. The method also includes identifying one or more search results that are responsive to the search query, parsing a document that is a target of one of the one or more results, identifying geographical address information from the parsing, generating a specific geographical indicator corresponding to the one search result, and transmitting for use by the computing device, data for automatically generating a navigational application having a destination at the specific geographical indicator.
1 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving at a computer server system, from a computing device that is remote from the server system, a string of text that comprises a search query;
identifying one or more search results that are responsive to the search query;
parsing a document that is a target of one of the one or more results, identifying geographical address information from the parsing, and generating a specific geographical indicator corresponding to the one search result; and
transmitting for use by the computing device, data for automatically generating a navigational application having a destination at the specific geographical indicator.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the document is parsed before the one or more search results are identified.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the search query does not contain any terms that identify a geographical point of interest.
4 . The method claim 1 , wherein identifying one or more search results comprises submitting the search query to a local search engine with a location identifier that corresponds to a current location of a user who submitted the search query.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the data for automatically generating the navigational application by generating data for a navigational route having a start point that corresponds to location information receive with the search query and an end point that corresponds to a location for the specific geographical indicator.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the data for automatically generating a navigational application includes street-level photographic images taken at points along a route to the specific geographical indicator.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the string of text is received in response to a user of the computing device speaking into the computing device a control term indicating a request to have navigation instructions generated.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the string of text represents words spoken by the user after the user speaks the control term.
9 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving at a computing device a spoken input from a user of the computing device;
transmitting at least a portion of the spoken input to a server system remote from the computing device;
receiving from the computer server system, information for generating a navigational display on the computing device from a first point to a second point identified by the spoken input; and
generating a turn-by-turn navigational display using the information received from the computer server system.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the spoken input does not include a name of a location or venue, or an address.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the spoken input is determined to be preceded by a spoken carrier phrase that indicates an action the user wishes to be taken using the computing device.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising separating the carrier phrase from the rest of the spoken input before transmitting the at least a portion of the spoken input to the server system.
13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the information for generating a navigational display is generated by providing a textual representation of the at least a portion of the spoken input to a search engine, and identifying a geographical indication in a target of a search result returned by the search engine.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein identifying a geographical indication in the target of the search result comprises parsing a landing page of a search result for information indicative of a geographical location.
15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising using the information indicative of a geographical indication to determine an destination point for a route that matches the point identified by the spoken input.
16 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising receiving an identifier for a destination point from the server system, providing the user with an opportunity to confirm that the identifier matches the spoken input, and providing information regarding the user's confirmation to the server system.
17 . A tangible non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having recorded thereon instructions that when executed perform operations comprising:
receiving at a computing device a spoken input from a user of the computing device;
transmitting at least a portion of the spoken input to a server system remote from the computing device;
receiving from the computer server system, information for generating a navigational display on the computing device from a first point to a second point identified by the spoken input; and
generating a turn-by-turn navigational display using the information received from the computer server system.
18 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the spoken input does not include a name of a location or venue, or an address.
19 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the spoken input is determined to be preceded by a spoken carrier phrase that indicates an action the user wishes to be taken using the computing device.
20 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 19 , further comprising separating the carrier phrase from the rest of the spoken input before transmitting the at least a portion of the spoken input to the server system.
21 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the information for generating a navigational display is generated by providing a textual representation of the at least a portion of the spoken input to a search engine, and identifying a geographical indication in a target of a search result returned by the search engine.
