Handle assembly for a domestic appliance

1. A domestic appliance comprising:

a cabinet;

a door mounted relative to the cabinet, said door including a front face portion;

a handle assembly for shifting the door relative to the cabinet, said handle assembly including:

a main body member including first and second end portions that are shaped to lie flush against the front face portion of the door, and first and second access holes in a wall of the main body member positioned respectively at the first and second end portions;

a first end insert positioned within the main body member at the first end portion of the main body member, the first end insert including a recess, a side wall, and an opening in the side wall;

a first fastener inserted through the first access hole, through the opening in the side wall of the first end insert, and projecting into the recess of the first end insert;

a second end insert positioned within the main body member at the second end portion of the main body member, the second end insert including a recess, a side wall, and an opening in the side wall;

a second fastener inserted through the second access hole, through the opening in the side wall of the second end insert, and projecting into the recess of the second end insert; and

first and second base members secured at spaced locations upon the front face portion of the door, said first and second base members projecting into the respective recesses of the first and second end inserts and interengaging with the respective first and second fasteners to secure the handle assembly to the door.

2. The domestic appliance of claim 1 wherein the first and second fasteners each comprise a set screw.

3. The domestic appliance of claim 1 wherein the first and second access holes are each positioned in a side wall of the main body member respectively at the first and second end portions of the main body member.

4. The domestic appliance of claim 1 wherein the openings in the side walls of the first and second end inserts are at least partially threaded.

5. The domestic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first and second end inserts each comprise a first surface that is shaped to lie flush against the front face portion of the door.

6. The domestic appliance of claim 1 wherein the domestic appliance is a refrigerator.

7. The domestic appliance of claim 6 wherein the domestic appliance is a French door refrigerator.

8. The domestic appliance of claim 6 wherein the door is a door of a fresh food compartment of the refrigerator.

9. The domestic appliance of claim 6 wherein the door is a door of a freezer compartment of the refrigerator.

10. The domestic appliance of claim 1 wherein the main body member is made from hydroformed metal.

11. The domestic appliance of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second base members includes a first section attached to the front face portion of the door and second section having tapered side area.

12. The domestic appliance of claim 11 , wherein the first and second fasteners each abut a portion of the tapered side areas of the respective first and second base members such that the handle assembly is drawn toward the front face portion of the door.

13. A method of securing a handle to a front face portion of an appliance door, the method comprising:

placing a first end insert in the handle at a first end portion of the handle, the first end insert including a recess, a side wall, and an opening in the side wall;

inserting a first fastener through a first access hole in a wall of the handle at the first end portion and through the opening in the side wall of the first end insert;

placing the first end portion of the handle over a first base member secured upon the front face portion of the door such that the first base member projects into the recess of the first end insert and the first end portion of the handle lies flush against the front face portion of the door;

placing a second end insert in the handle at a second end portion of the handle, the second end insert including a recess, a side wall, and an opening in the side wall;

inserting a second fastener through a second access hole in a wall of the handle at the second end portion through the opening, in the side wall of the second end insert;

placing the second end portion of the handle over a second base member secured upon the front face portion of the door at a location spaced from the first base member such that the second base member projects into the recess of the second end insert and the second end portion of the handle lies flush against the front face portion of the door; and

allowing the first and second fasteners to respectively interengage with the first and second base members.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the first and second access holes are each positioned in a side wall of the handle respectively at the first and second end portions of the handle.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein a surface of each of the first and second end inserts lies flush against the front face portion of the door.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein each of the first and second base members includes a first section attached to the front face portion of the door and second section having tapering side areas.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein allowing the first and second fasteners to respectively interengage with the first and second base members comprises:

tightening the first and second fasteners to abut a portion of the tapered side areas of the respective first and second base members; and

as the first and second fasteners are tightened, drawing the first and second end portions of the handle toward the front face portion of the door.
