Abstract

In embodiments of the present invention improved capabilities are described for autonomous shifting of at least a portion of a lighting load off an energy distribution grid, comprising electrically connecting a lighting device to the energy distribution grid; causing the lighting device to interpret information obtained from an information source proximate the lighting device; and causing the lighting device to select from at least two different power sources based on the interpretation, where selecting may include a sharing of the load between the two different power sources, and where one power source may be the energy distribution grid.

Claims (48)

1. A lighting unit for a distributed energy storage solution, the lighting unit comprising:

a housing;

a battery associated with the housing and configured to be charged from an external power supply, wherein the external power supply has access to an electrical grid connection;

a light source associated with the housing and configured to emit light when powered by an amount of power from the external power supply and the battery; and

a timing facility associated with the housing, the lighting unit, and a controller, the timing facility being configured to provide information to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to:

select, based on the information received from the timing facility, a first portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the external power supply;

select, based on the information received from the timing facility, a second portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the battery; and

supply the amount of power to the light source by supplying the first portion of the amount of power from the external power supply and the second portion of the amount of power from the battery to cause the light source to emit light at an intensity level based on at least one of the received information from the timing facility or a reduction in power demand from the external power supply during a period of peak usage, and wherein

the timing facility stores times when selection of the first portion of the amount power and the second portion of the amount of power is disabled.

2. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the timing facility utilizes a calendar to determine times to select the first portion of the amount of power and the second portion of the amount of power.

3. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the timing facility utilizes a timing profile to determine times to select the first portion of the amount of power and the second portion of the amount of power.

4. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the timing facility is a clock that is synchronized with a central clock.

5. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the timing facility is a timer that counts to a predetermined period.

6. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the timing facility utilizes time of day.

7. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes a processor.

8. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the light source is an LED.

9. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the lighting unit includes an LED driver module.

10. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the light source is a fluorescent light source.

11. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the lighting unit includes a fluorescent lamp ballast.

12. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the lighting unit is an inverter module driving a fluorescent lamp ballast and fluorescent light source.

13. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the lighting unit is a lighting fixture.

14. The lighting unit of claim 13 , wherein the lighting fixture includes a housing that receives the light source.

15. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the lighting unit is an adapter that accepts the light source plugged into it.

16. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the step of selecting involves switching between the external power supply and the battery.

17. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the step of selecting involves sharing power between the external power supply and the battery simultaneously.

18. The lighting unit of claim 17 , wherein x percent of power is consumed from one of the battery and y percent of power is consumed from the external power supply.

19. The lighting unit of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the amount of power is zero, and power is available from the external power supply.

20. A method of shifting a lighting load off an electrical grid, comprising:

connecting a lighting unit to the electrical grid by an electrical grid connection;

charging a battery from the electrical grid connection;

powering a light source which emits light in response to receiving an amount of power from the electrical grid connection and the battery;

receiving information from an information source proximate the lighting unit, wherein the information is indicative of a time of day;

selecting, based on the received information, a first portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the electrical grid connection;

selecting, based on the received information, a second portion of the amount of power to be supplied to the light source from the battery; and

supplying the amount of power to the light source by supplying the first portion of the amount of power from the electrical grid connection and the second portion of the amount of power from the battery to cause the light source to emit light at an intensity level based on at least one of the received information from the information source or a reduction in power demand from the electrical grid connection during a period of peak usage, wherein the information source stores times when selection of the first portion of the amount power and the second portion of the amount of power is disabled.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the steps of selecting the first portion of the amount of power and selecting the second portion of the amount of power are performed by a controller.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the controller includes a processor.

23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit includes an LED lighting source.

24. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit includes an LED driver module.

25. The method of claim 20 , wherein the light source is a fluorescent light source.

26. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit includes a fluorescent lamp ballast.

27. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit is an inverter module driving a fluorescent lamp ballast and fluorescent light source.

28. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit is a lighting fixture.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the lighting fixture includes a housing that receives the light source.

30. The method of claim 20 , wherein the lighting unit is an adapter that accepts the light source plugged into it.

31. The method of claim 20 , wherein the step of selecting involves switching between the electrical grid connection and the battery.

32. The method of claim 20 , wherein the step of selecting involves sharing power between the electrical grid connection and the battery simultaneously.

33. The method of claim 32 , wherein x percent of power is consumed from the battery and y percent of power is consumed from the electrical grid connection.
