Superhydrophilic coatings
A superhydrophilic coating on a substrate can be antireflective and antifogging. The coating can remain antireflective and antifogging for extended periods. The coating can include oppositely charge inorganic nanoparticles, and can be substantially free of an organic polymer. The coating can be made mechanically robust by a hydrothermal calcination.
1. An article comprising a surface comprising:
a planar substrate; and
a hydrothermally calcinated inorganic nanoparticle multilayer coating including;
a first layer including a first plurality of inorganic nanoparticles having a first electrostatic charge in contact with the substrate; and
a second layer including an oppositely charged second plurality of inorganic nanoparticles in contact with the first plurality of inorganic nanoparticles;
wherein the first plurality of inorganic nanoparticles and the second plurality of nanoparticles are fused to each other in the presence of a calcination reagent selected to promote fusing of the first plurality of nanoparticles and the second plurality of nanoparticles,
wherein the multilayer coating includes only neutrally-charged nanoparticles and free of polyelectrolyte polymers,
wherein the multilayer coating is adhered to the substrate.
2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is antireflective.
3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the surface is antifogging.
