Abstract

A multi-tiered communication system for provisioning a cloud computing system to host a media server. The system includes a data center including one or more Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) functions that are configured for use with a caller who initiates contact with the data center. The system also includes a media server implemented in a cloud computing system. The media server is configured to route an incoming call from one subscriber to another, or in the case of a caller to the data center, to route one or more IVR messages to the caller and to connect the caller with an agent for real-time communication.

Claims (19)

1. A method for provisioning a cloud computing system to provide media server functionality in a contact handling system or telephony system in response to an increase in demand, the method comprising:

determining that demand for resources of an existing media server in a location has increased to a level where it is desirable for additional media server resources, the existing media server hosted by permanent computing infrastructure, the permanent computing infrastructure being computing infrastructure dedicated to the contact handling system or telephony system;

contacting a cloud computing system, the cloud computing system being a pool of configurable computing resources configured to be shared between the contact handling system or telephony system and at least one other system;

provisioning the cloud computing system to implement one or more media servers of the cloud computing system that include similar resources as the existing media server so as to remove demand from the existing media server;

determining that a level of use of the cloud computing system warrants additional permanent computing infrastructure to be installed to host one or more additional media servers dedicated the contact handling system or telephony system;

arranging for installation of the permanent computing infrastructure; and

discontinuing use of the cloud computing system once the permanent computing infrastructure is installed and is hosting the one or more additional media servers dedicated to the contact handling system or telephony system.

2. The method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the demand for the resources of the existing media server has decreased to a level that can be supported by the existing media server; and

requesting that the cloud computing system no longer implement the one or more additional media servers.

3. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the determination that the one or more additional media servers are needed is made by a data center, wherein the data center, the media server and the cloud computing system that hosts the one or more additional media servers are in close proximity to each other, are in the same country, or are in the same physical location.

4. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the determination that the one or more additional media servers are needed is made by a data center, wherein the data center is located in a first location and the one or more additional media servers and the cloud computing system that hosts the one or more additional media servers are located in a second location that is remote from the first location.

5. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system is unilaterally provisioned without requiring interaction with the cloud computing environment's provider.

6. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system provides pooled computing resources using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to demand.

7. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system includes a shared pool of configurable computing resources that is configured such that a customer of the cloud computing system may unilaterally provision the configurable computing resources without requiring human interaction with a provider of the cloud computing system.

8. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system is hosted by a third party and the infrastructure of the cloud computing system is owned or operated by the third party.

9. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the resources of the cloud computing system hosting the one or more additional media servers are shared with other users.

10. The method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising receiving an invoice for use of the cloud computing system that is based on a level of use of resources of the cloud computing system.

11. The method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing system is located in the location of the existing media server.
