Abstract

A system for method for adjusting radio frequency parameters. A network performance device includes a network performance function executed to monitor network performance between a wireless network device and a wireless packet network switch, determine whether at least one network performance value of the wireless network device exceeds one or more predetermined threshold values, and communicate an instruction to adjust the one or more RF parameters between the wireless network device and the wireless device in response to exceeding the one or more predetermined threshold values. An RF signal path is provided between the wireless network device and the wireless device. The network performance is concatenated into data packets communicated between the wireless network device and the wireless packet network switch utilizing a packet network.

2. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the instruction includes bi-directional adjustments initiated from either side of the RF signal path.

3. The network performance device of claim 2 , wherein the set of instructions are further executed to:

instruct the wireless network device and the wireless device to switch to one or more different channels to improve the network performance through the RF signal path.

4. The network performance device of claim 3 , wherein the wireless device and the wireless network device add, drop, or switch between the plurality of channels of the RF signal path to optimize the network performance.

5. The network performance device of claim 2 , wherein the instruction is enabled to modify one or more of encoding, modulation, protocol, wireless technology, and frequency to enhance the RF signal path between the wireless network device and the wireless device.

6. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the network performance device is part of a customer environment of a local area network.

7. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless device is operable to switch between a plurality of connectivity modes or wireless technologies of the RF signal path to optimize the network performance to the wireless network device.

8. The network performance device of claim 7 , wherein the connectivity modes of the wireless device include two or more of 802.11, WiMax, CDMA, and TDMA.

9. The network performance device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an input/output (I/O) unit configured to communicate the data packets over the network, wherein the memory stores the network performance indicative of bandwidth of the data packets that include real-time content in comparison with a bandwidth for total data packets communicated over the network by the wireless network device.

10. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the network performance device receives the total, the bandwidth, and the data packets including real-time content.

11. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the set of instructions are further executed to:

communicate network performance data to the wireless network device located on the packet network requesting the network performance concatenated in the data packets at the wireless network device; and

adjust one or more of encoding rates, decoding rates, channel assignments, wireless technology and power levels to optimize the network performance to the wireless device.

12. The network performance device of claim 1 , wherein the network performance device includes a module configured to separately count total data packets and data packets including real-time content through an end-to-end path operation administration and maintenance (OAM) channel, and wherein the wireless device includes a user interface selection presented to a user for initiating the adjusting of the one or more RF parameters between the wireless network device and the wireless device.

13. A method for adjusting radio frequency parameters comprising:

transmitting data packets from a wireless packet network switch to a network performance device in communication with the wireless packet network switch;

determining whether at least one network performance value of a wireless network device exceeds one or more predetermined thresholds; and

communicating an instruction to the wireless network device to adjust one or more RF parameters between the wireless network device and a wireless device in response to exceeding the one or more predetermined thresholds; wherein an RF signal path is provided between the wireless network device and the wireless device, and wherein communication between the wireless network device and the wireless device continues following the adjustment of the one or more RF parameters between the wireless network device and the wireless device, wherein the wireless network device is a wireless network device operable to count a total of the data packets being communicated via the wireless network device during a time period, count the data packets including real-time content being communicated via the wireless network device during the time period, determine bandwidth of the data packets being communicated via the wireless network device, determine bandwidth of the data packets including real-time content being communicated via the wireless network device, and determine if the one or more predetermine threshold values has been exceeded based upon collected information.
