Abstract

A single sensing probe comprising multiple, spatially separate, sensing sites is utilized to sense neural activity. The sensing probe includes multiple conductors each with multiple sensing sites in a fixed geometric arrangement. The sensing probe is configured to comprise multiple combined sensing sites in polytrode configuration. By appropriately combining the wire groupings at each combined sensing site, activity sensed from a single wire with multiple sensing sites, can be coupled with other wires to unmix signals from the spatially separate sites and leverage the power of combinatorics to maximize total recording bandwidth and single neuron/unit yield per wire and per probe.

Claims (17)

1. A sensing probe comprising:

a plurality of electrical conductors, each conductor of the plurality of conductors comprising a plurality of sensing sites; and

a plurality of combined sensing sites configured to sense electrical energy, each combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites being formed by proximate portions of multiple conductors of the plurality of conductors, each combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites being spatially separate, wherein no two combined sensing sites are formed by a same combination of conductors.

2. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites is formed by proximate portions of all of the plurality of conductors.

3. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites comprises a polytrode electrode.

4. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites comprises a tetrode electrode.

5. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites comprises a triode electrode.

6. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein at least one combined sensing site of the plurality of combined sensing sites comprises a stereotrode electrode.

7. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein the proximate portions comprise uninsulated portions of electrical conductors.

8. The sensing probe of claim 7 , wherein the uninsulated portions are plated.

9. The sensing probe of claim 7 , wherein the uninsulated portions are plated with gold.

10. The sensing probe of claim 7 , wherein the uninsulated portions are plated with an adhering material.

11. The sensing probe of claim 7 , wherein the uninsulated portions are plated with a material for altering a sensing property of the sensing probe.

12. The sensing probe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of conductors is formed as a braid.

13. The sensing probe of claim 1 , further comprising biodegradable elements surrounding at least a portion of the plurality of conductors.

14. The sensing probe of claim 13 , wherein responsive to degradation of the biodegradable elements, a geometric structure of the plurality of conductors expands.

15. The sensing probe of claim 13 , wherein responsive to degradation of the biodegradable elements, a geometric structure of the plurality of combined sensing sites expands.
