Abstract

A process for forming a multilayer film includes coating a polymeric substrate film with a liquid fluoropolymer coating. The liquid fluoropolymer coating includes a fluoropolymer, solvent, a compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer, and a cross-linking agent. The process further includes cross-linking the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer to form a cross-linked polymer network in the fluoropolymer coating, removing the solvent from the fluoropolymer coating, and adhering the fluoropolymer coating to the polymeric substrate film.

Claims (25)

1. A process for forming a multilayer film comprising:

coating a polymeric substrate film with a liquid fluoropolymer coating, wherein the liquid fluoropolymer coating comprises:

a fluoropolymer selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl fluoride;

solvent;

a compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer; and

a cross-linking agent;

cross-linking the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer to form a cross-linked polymer network in the fluoropolymer coating;

removing the solvent from the fluoropolymer coating; and

adhering the fluoropolymer coating to the polymeric substrate film.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein cross-linking, removing, and adhering are performed by heating.

3. The process of claim 2 , wherein:

the fluoropolymer is in the form of particles in a dispersion; and

heating further comprises coalescing the fluoropolymer.

4. The process of claim 2 , wherein heating is a single heating.

5. The process of claim 4 , wherein heating comprises heating to a temperature in a range of about 150° C. to 250° C.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polycarbonates, acrylics, polyethers, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers, amides, acrylamides, urethanes and combinations thereof.

7. The process of claim 6 , wherein the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyester polyols, polycarbonate polyols, acrylic polyols, polyether polyols, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers, and combinations thereof.

8. The process of claim 1 , wherein cross-linking the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer comprises forming a polyurethane network.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the cross-linking agent comprises an isocyanate functional compound or a blocked isocyanate functional compound.

10. The process of claim 1 , wherein adhering comprises forming bonds between functional groups of the polymeric substrate film and the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer, the cross-linking agent, or a combination thereof.

11. The process of claim 10 , wherein said polymeric substrate film is unprimed polymeric substrate film.

12. The process of claim 10 , wherein said polymeric substrate film is unmodified polymeric substrate film.

13. The process of claim 10 , further comprising modifying the polymeric substrate film prior to coating to provide additional functional groups capable of forming bonds with the compatible cross-linkable adhesive polymer, the cross-linking agent, or a combination thereof.

14. The process of claim 13 , wherein modifying comprises using a surface activation process.

15. The process of claim 1 , wherein coating comprises coating both surfaces of the polymeric substrate film with the fluoropolymer coating.
