Packaging machine and packages made therewith
This invention relates to a liquid-filled tetrahedral package having a longitudinal fin seal and having a first transverse seal on one end of the package and a second transverse seal on the opposite end of the package, wherein the first and second transverse seals are substantially perpendicular to one another.
1. A liquid-filled tetrahedral package, said package being comprised of a strip-shaped sheet of packaging material having opposed longitudinal edges, an exterior surface, and an interior surface, said package having a longitudinal fin seal and having a first transverse seal on one end of said package and a second transverse seal on an opposite end of said package, said second transverse seal being substantially perpendicular to said first transverse seal, and wherein the packaging material is a multi-layer film structure comprised of an outermost layer of polymer film, a central layer of polymer film wherein the central layer is surrounded on each side by a film layer, and a meltable sealant film layer that forms the innermost layer of the package.
2. The package of claim 1 , wherein the central layer of polymer film is comprised of material selected from the group consisting of polyester, polypropylene and nylon.
3. The package of claim 1 , wherein the central layer of polymer film is metallized.
4. The package of claim 1 , wherein the outermost layer of polymer film is comprised of material selected from the group consisting of polyester, polypropylene and nylon.
5. The package of claim 1 , wherein the packaging material is printed on the outermost layer of polymer film.
6. The package of claim 1 , wherein said longitudinal fin seal comprises the longitudinal edges of said sheet of packaging material, said longitudinal edges having been aligned in the area of said longitudinal fin seal, and said interior surfaces of said packaging material is heated and pressed to form said longitudinal fin seal.
7. The package of claim 6 , wherein said longitudinal fin seal lies substantially flat against said package.
8. The package of claim 1 , wherein the packaging material is printed.
9. A liquid-filled tetrahedral package, said package being comprised of a strip-shaped sheet of packaging material having opposed longitudinal edges, an exterior surface, and an interior surface, said package having a longitudinal fin seal and having a first transverse seal on one end of said package and a second transverse seal on an opposite end of said package, said second transverse seal being substantially perpendicular to said first transverse seal, and wherein the packaging material is a multi-layer coated paper structure comprised of an outermost layer of coated paper, a tie layer connecting the coated paper layer to a barrier film, and a meltable sealant film layer that forms the innermost layer of the package.
10. The package of claim 9 , wherein the outermost layer of coated paper further comprises a protective outer coating.
11. The package of claim 9 , wherein said longitudinal fin seal comprises the longitudinal edges of said sheet of packaging material, said longitudinal edges having been aligned in the area of said longitudinal fin seal, and said interior surfaces of said packaging material is heated and pressed to form said longitudinal fin seal.
12. The package of claim 11 , wherein said longitudinal fin seal lies substantially flat against said package.
13. The package of claim 9 , wherein the packaging material is printed.
