Abstract

A system and method are provided that allow meat logs to be manually loaded into a slicing station and thereafter be continuously automatically processed at the slicing station, a harping station, and an insertion station for automated packaging thereof without the need for handling of the meat stacks by workers. To this end, the slicing station is effective to form smaller sections or chubs from the meat logs and to do so such that the chubs are provided with substantially parallel flat end-faces to ensure that high quality meat slices are generated therefrom. The chubs are then transported to the harping station where each of the chubs undergoes a single cutting operation, thus simultaneously forming the meat slices therefrom and substantially maintaining the slices in the configuration of the chubs for generating well-formed stacks of the slices. Thereafter, the stacks are received at the insertion station where they are transferred to their packages, on an automated basis without the need for manual handling thereof. This is enabled due to the well-formed stacks generated by the harping station which allows the stacks to be dropped into the packages aligned therebelow.

Claims (26)

1. An automated processing method for a meat product, the method comprising:

cutting a section of the meat product from a larger section thereof, the cut section corresponding to a predetermined amount of the meat product to be placed in a package;

moving the cut section toward a staging position using force applied to the cut section from a plurality cut sections positioned upstream of the cut section;

stopping the advancement of the cut section in the staging position misaligned with a slicing station;

moving the cut section from the staging position to an indexed position misaligned with the slicing station using force applied to the cut section from a plurality cut sections positioned upstream of the cut section;

moving the cut section from the indexed position into a slicing position aligned with the slicing station;

slicing the cut section into a predetermined number of slices that are formed simultaneously in a single slicing operation by advancement of the cut section through a set of harping blades;

aligning the plurality of packages with the stacks of slices for receipt in the package; and

shifting the stacks of slices automatically into the aligned packages to avoid manual handling of the stack.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the cut section toward the staging position further includes the step of moving the cut section down an inclined surface.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the cut section is stopped in the staging position by a side of an indexing advancement mechanism when the advancement mechanism is in an extended position.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the cut section is shifted into the indexed position by the upstream cut sections following retraction of the indexing advancement mechanism.

5. The method of claim 4 , further including advancing the cut section through the set of harping blades using a slicing advancement mechanism.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the inclined surface is a vibratory table, the vibratory table effective to orient the cut section such that the cut section rests on a cut end of the section.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the cut section from the indexed position into a slicing position further includes the steps of moving the cut section from the indexed position into an intermediate position, then moving the cut section from the intermediate position to the slicing position.

8. The method of claim 7 , further including the step of using an intermediate advancement mechanism to move the cut section from the intermediate position to the slicing position.

9. An automated processing method for a meat product, the method comprising:

cutting a section of the meat product from a larger section thereof, the cut section corresponding to a predetermined amount of the meat product to be placed in a package;

moving the cut section toward a staging position using force applied to the cut section from a plurality cut sections positioned upstream of the cut section;

stopping the advancement of the cut section in the staging position misaligned with an insertion station;

moving the cut section from the staging position to an indexed position misaligned with the insertion station using force applied to the cut section from a plurality cut sections positioned upstream of the cut section;

moving the cut section from the indexed position into an insertion position aligned with the insertion station;

aligning the plurality of packages with the cut section for receipt in the package;

moving the cut section from the insertion position to the insertion station; and

shifting the cut section automatically into the aligned packages at the insertion station to avoid manual handling of the cut section.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the cut sections are chubs and further including the step of slicing the cut section into a predetermined number of slices that are formed simultaneously in a single slicing operation by advancement of the cut section through a set of harping blades prior to the step of shifting the cut section automatically into the aligned packages at the insertion station.
