Abstract

Shape memory dental retention systems which facilitate the adjustment or removal of an oral appliance, e.g., a crown or bridge, from a reconfigurable abutment assembly are described. The adjustable abutment assembly may be secured to an anchoring implant bored into the bones within the mouth. The abutment assembly has a projecting abutment portion with one or more shape memory material sleeves or plates or elements extending along the abutment. Each of the sleeves has a length with at least one curved or arcuate portion. Energy may be applied to the elements such that the arcuate portion flattens to allow for the oral appliance to be placed thereupon while removal of the energy allows the elements to reconfigure into its curved configuration thereby locking the oral appliance to the abutment. Removal of the oral appliance may be effected by reapplication of energy to the elements.

Claims (23)

1. An adjustable securement system for an oral prosthesis, comprising:

an abutment assembly configured to be secured to a dental implant;

one or more shape memory elements secured along an exterior surface of the abutment such that a portion of the elements extend radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration; and

an oral prosthesis configured to be positioned upon the abutment,

wherein the one or more shape memory elements are configured to be secured against the oral prosthesis once the oral prosthesis is positioned upon the abutment and are actuatable upon application of heat, electrical, or electromagnetic energy to transition between a low-profile configuration where the portion of each element is straightened and the locking configuration.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the abutment assembly comprises a lower abutment portion and an upper abutment portion which is translatable relative to the lower abutment portion.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more shape memory elements are attached to the abutment via one or more pins.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more shape memory elements each define a curved or arcuate portion which extends radially relative to the abutment.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more shape memory elements are farmed from a sleeve positioned over an abutment shaft.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the sleeve forms a tapered configuration.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the portion of the one or more shape memory elements extends radially as a flap.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein at least one of the flaps extends radially outward relative to the abutment assembly.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein at least one of the flaps extends radially inward relative to the abutment assembly.

10. The system of claim 1 further comprising one or more biasing elements positioned along the abutment assembly and which biases the portion of each element into the locking configuration.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the one or more biasing elements comprise a polymeric ring coupled to an abutment shaft and contacting against an inner surface of each of the elements.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein the one or more biasing elements comprise a spring positioned longitudinally over an abutment shaft and coupling an upper abutment portion to a lower abutment portion.

13. The system of claim 10 wherein the one or more biasing elements comprise an inner sleeve positioned longitudinally over an abutment shaft and annularly to the one or more biasing elements.

14. The system of claim 1 further comprising one or more insulating sleeves positioned between the one or more biasing elements and the abutment assembly.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the abutment assembly comprises a tapered abutment shaft upon which the one or more biasing elements are attached.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the abutment assembly comprises an abutment shaft which is angled relative to the implant when the abutment assembly is secured to the implant.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the abutment assembly comprises an upper abutment portion and a lower abutment portion which defines an angle between a coupling interface with the implant and a coupling interface with the upper abutment portion.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein the abutment assembly comprises a rounded abutment interface which defines at least one direction slot therein such that the abutment assembly is angularly adjustable relative to the implant.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein the abutment assembly comprises an abutment shaft which forms a non-circular cross-sectional area.
