Abstract

An applicator for dispensing two separate tissue adhesives includes a generally elongate body having two distinct interior regions, each containing one of the two tissue adhesives. Hinged levers associated with each region selectively force the expulsion of the adhesive from the end portions of the applicator in response to application of force by the operator.

Claims (23)

1. A method of closing and sealing a wound comprising:

closing the wound by applying a first tissue adhesive to a plurality of spots at the edges of the wound to retain the edges together; and

sealing the wound by applying a sealant layer of a second tissue adhesive to the wound,

wherein the first tissue adhesive is a fast-setting strong prepolymer adhesive and the second tissue adhesive is a prepolymer adhesive capable of forming a flexible sealant layer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first tissue adhesive is provided in a first ampoule and the second tissue adhesive is provided in a second ampoule.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first ampoule and the second ampoule are housed in a single applicator.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first tissue adhesive comprises n-butyl cyanoacrylate.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second tissue adhesive comprises octyl cyanoacrylate.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second tissue adhesive is a blend of butyl and octyl cyanoacrylate.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second tissue adhesive is a blend of butyl and decyl cyanoacrylate.

8. A method of closing and sealing a wound with an adhesive applicator, the applicator comprising:

a housing assembly defining a first and a second separate regions adapted to contain a first and a second distinct fluids, the first and second regions being in fluid communication with the exterior of the applicator at said first and second end portions of the applicator, respectively, and being separated from each other such that the first and the second fluids do not intermix within the housing assembly, wherein the first and the second end portions are at an opposite end of the applicator;

a first pressure device which is a first hinged lever having a first plunger portion for imparting sufficient pressure to the first fluid selectively to cause egress of same out of the applicator at said first end portion;

and a second pressure device which is a second hinged lever having a second plunger portion for imparting sufficient pressure to the second fluid selectively to cause egress of same out of the applicator at said second end portion;

wherein the first fluid is a fast-setting strong prepolymer adhesive and the second fluid is a prepolymer adhesive capable of forming a flexible sealant layer,

the method comprising:

closing the wound by applying drops of the first fluid to the wound, the drops being applied by depressing the first pressure device with sufficient force to cause egress of the first fluid out of the application at the first end portion; and

sealing the wound by applying a sealant layer of the second fluid to the wound, the sealant layer being applied by depressing the second pressure device to cause egress of the second fluid out of the applicator at the second end portion.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first fluid and the second fluid are cyanoacrylate prepolymers.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first fluid comprises n-butyl cyanoacrylate.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second fluid comprises octyl cyanoacrylate.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second fluid is a blend of butyl and octyl cyanoacrylate.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second fluid is a blend of butyl and decyl cyanoacrylate.
