Abstract

Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

combining an irradiated lignocellulosic material with a microorganism and/or an enzyme, the microorganism and/or enzyme utilizing the irradiated lignocellulosic material to produce a product, the irradiated lignocellulosic material having been produced by exposing a lignocellulosic material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by directing each of the electrons to make multiple passes through an accelerator cavity comprising a time-dependent electric field to provide the lignocellulosic material with a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein an orientation of the electric field is selected to correspond to a direction of motion of the electrons in the accelerator cavity.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein an electric field source is positioned in the cavity.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy of each electron, per pass, is from about 0.3 MeV to about 2.0 MeV.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the electric field provides a single-cavity-pass gain of at least about 1.0 MeV to each electron.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 50 KW.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 100 KW.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrons contact the lignocellulosic material in the form of a shower.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein exposing comprises irradiating the lignocellulosic material with more than one electron beam device.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the product comprises a fuel.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the product comprises a sugar.

12. A method comprising:

combining an irradiated lignocellulosic material with a microorganism and/or an enzyme, the microorganism and/or enzyme utilizing the irradiated lignocellulosic material to produce a product, the irradiated lignocellulosic material having been produced by exposing a lignocellulosic material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by directing the electrons to pass through an acceleration cavity comprising multiple electrodes at different potentials to provide the lignocellulosic material with a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the potentials are static potentials.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the potentials are variable potentials.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 50 KW.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 100 KW.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the electrons contact the lignocellulosic material in the form of a shower.

18. The method of claim 12 wherein exposing comprises irradiating the lignocellulosic material with more than one electron beam device.

19. The method of claim 12 wherein the product comprises a fuel.

20. The method of claim 12 wherein the product comprises a sugar.

21. A method comprising:

combining an irradiated lignocellulosic material with a microorganism and/or an enzyme, the microorganism and/or enzyme utilizing the irradiated lignocellulosic material to produce a product, the irradiated lignocellulosic material having been produced by exposing a lignocellulosic material to a plurality of electrons that have been accelerated by an electron beam generating device selected from the group consisting of electrostatic generators, cascade generators, transformer generators, low energy accelerators with a scanning system, low energy accelerators with a linear cathode, linear accelerators, and pulsed accelerators to provide the lignocellulosic material with a radiation dose of greater than 10 Mrad, wherein the electrons contact the lignocellulosic material in the form of a shower.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 50 KW.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein the electrons are accelerated by a device having an output power of at least 100 KW.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein the product comprises a fuel.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein the product comprises a sugar.
