Abstract

An aqueous hydraulic fluid composition comprising a first lubricant comprising at least one phospholipid and a second lubricant comprising an alkoxylate salt. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition contains less than about 20% by weight (preferably none or substantially none) of an oil selected from the group consisting of mineral oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils, and mixtures thereof. The use of alkoxylate salts provides increased lubricity and also acts as an emulsion stabilizer for the composition.

Claims (41)

1. A hydraulic fluid composition comprising:

a first lubricant comprising a lecithin; and

a second lubricant comprising a stearate salt selected from the group consisting of alkali metal stearates, alkaline earth stearates, and ammonium stearates; and

wherein the hydraulic fluid composition is at least substantially free of an oil selected from the group consisting of mineral oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils, and mixtures thereof and wherein the concentration of the stearate salt and the concentration of the lecithin in the composition are in a proportion to each other such that the stearate is solubilized by the composition.

2. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises water in an amount between about 10% and about 95% by weight based on the total weight of the hydraulic fluid composition.

3. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the stearate salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium stearate, zinc stearate and magnesium stearate.

4. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 3 , wherein the stearate salt is calcium stearate.

5. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a corrosion inhibitor.

6. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 5 , wherein the corrosion inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of inorganic phosphates, alkylcarboxylic acids neutralized with an alkanolamine, alkylamines, alkanolamines, amine carboxylates, and benzotriazoles.

7. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises an anti-freeze additive.

8. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 7 , wherein the anti-freeze additive is selected from the group consisting of monoethylene glycol, glycerol, propylene glycol, 2-butene-1,4-diol, polyethylene glycols and polypropylene glycols.

9. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 8 , wherein the anti-freeze additive is monoethylene glycol.

10. The hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein hydraulic fluid composition is bio-degradable and, wherein substantially all of the ingredients in the hydraulic fluid composition are dischargable in a marine environment while posing little or no risk to the environment.

The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a biocide, wherein the biocide is compatible with the first lubricant and the second lubricant such that the biocide does not affect the lubricating properties of the hydraulic fluid composition.

12. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 11 , wherein the biocide is selected from the group consisting of boron containing salts, triazines, oxazolidines, guanidines, and fatty acid quaternary ammonium salts.

13. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 12 , wherein the biocide is borax decahydrate.

14. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic fluid composition comprises between about 4-14% of the lecithin and between about 1-7% of the stearate salt.

15. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 3 , wherein the hydraulic fluid composition comprises between about 1-7% of the stearate salt.

16. The aqueous hydraulic fluid composition according to claim 1 , wherein the second lubricant is the only emulsion stabilizer in the hydraulic fluid composition.

17. A method of making a hydraulic fluid composition that is usable in a marine environment, the method comprising the steps of:

a) preparing a hydraulic fluid concentrate comprising:

i) a first lubricant comprising a lecithin;

ii) a second lubricant comprising an alkoxylate salt;

iii) optionally, a biocide;

iv) optionally, a corrosion inhibitor; and

v) optionally, an anti-freeze additive; and

b) diluting the hydraulic fluid concentrate with water;

wherein the hydraulic fluid composition is at least substantially free of an oil selected from the group consisting of mineral oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils and mixtures thereof and wherein the concentration of the alkoxylate salt and concentration of the lecithin in the hydraulic fluid are in a proportion to each other such that the alkoxylate salt is solubilized by the hydraulic fluid.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid composition comprises water in an amount between about 10% and about 95% by weight based on the total weight of the hydraulic fluid composition.

19. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the alkoxylate salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium stearate, zinc stearate and magnesium stearate.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the alkoxylate salt is calcium stearate.

21. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid concentrate comprises a corrosion inhibitor and the corrosion inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of inorganic phosphates, alkylcarboxylic acids neutralized with an alkanolamine, alkylamines, alkanolamines, amine carboxylates, and benzotriazoles.

22. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid concentrate comprises an anti-freeze additive and the anti-freeze additive is selected from the group consisting of monoethylene glycol, glycerol, propylene glycol, 2-butene-1,4-diol, polyethylene glycols and polypropylene glycols.

23. The method according to claim 22 , wherein the anti-freeze additive is monoethylene glycol.

24. The method according to claim 17 , wherein hydraulic fluid composition is bio-degradable and wherein substantially all of the ingredients in the hydraulic fluid composition are dischargable in a marine environment while posing little or no risk to the environment.

25. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid concentrate comprises a biocide, wherein the biocide is compatible with the first lubricant and the second lubricant such that the biocide does not affect the lubricating properties of the hydraulic fluid composition.

26. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the biocide is selected from the group consisting of a boron containing salt, triazines, oxazolidines, guanidines, and fatty acid quaternary ammonium salts.

27. The method according to claim 26 , wherein the biocide is borax decahydrate.

28. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid composition comprises between about 4-14% of the lecithin and between about 1-7% of the alkoxylate salt.

29. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic fluid composition is capable of generating a torque of at least 35 inch-pounds at an applied load of at least 2400 pounds when the hydraulic fluid is subjected to a Falex extreme pressure test.

30. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the second lubricant is the only emulsion stabilizer in the hydraulic fluid composition.
