Abstract

A task-based imaging system for obtaining data regarding a scene for use in a task includes an image data capturing arrangement for (a) imaging a wavefront of electromagnetic energy from the scene to an intermediate image over a range of spatial frequencies, (b) modifying phase of the wavefront, (c) detecting the intermediate image, and (d) generating image data over the range of spatial frequencies. The task-based imaging system also includes an image data processing arrangement for processing the image data and performing the task. The image data capturing and image data processing arrangements cooperate so that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the task-based imaging system is greater than SNR of the task-based imaging system without phase modification of the wavefront over the range of spatial frequencies.

Claims (13)

1. A co-operational set of task-based imaging systems that obtain data regarding a scene for use in biometric recognition of a subject within the scene, comprising:

a first imaging system that provides first image data of the scene for locating the subject within the scene; and

a second imaging system that provides second image data for the biometric recognition of the subject, the first imaging system being configured to transfer low resolution image data to the second imaging system,

wherein the second imaging system comprises optics capable of varying magnification and depth of field of the second image data, the first image data being utilized to automatically adjust the at least one of magnification and depth of field to maintain a required signal to noise ratio for the biometric recognition, and

wherein the optics includes a slidable optical element and variable wavefront coding by use of dual rotating phase filters.

2. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , the first image data being utilized to track the subject while moving within the scene.

3. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , the second image data being of higher resolution than the first image data.

4. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , each of the first and second imaging systems being one of red-green-blue, cyan-magenta-yellow, gray scale and infrared type imagers, the first and second imaging systems being of the same type.

5. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , each of the first and second imaging systems being one of red-green-blue visible, cyan-magenta-yellow, gray scale and infrared type imagers, the first and second imaging systems being of different type than one another.

6. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , wherein the biometric recognition of the subject is performed by the task-based imaging system.

7. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , wherein the biometric recognition is of an imaged iris of the subject.

8. The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , wherein the first imaging system directly transfers the low resolution image data to the second imaging system.

The set of task-based imaging systems of claim 1 , wherein the slidable optical element is capable of cooperating with a magnification-modifying element, the slidable optical element, the magnification-modifying element, and the dual rotating phase filters capable of modulating a phase of a wavefront of electromagnetic energy from the subject.
