Abstract

An integrated system for: complete waste compactor/container operational control; remote fullness monitoring; and, remote performance and maintenance diagnostics. Such diagnostic information is transferred wirelessly or otherwise to one or more recipients, so as to directly provide a critical warning in real time. The waste compactor/container controller/monitor system allows for periodic substantially real-time oil viscosity measurements of the hydraulic fluid to account for changes in such viscosity. The system adjusts the timing of the compactor stroke to permit more efficient operation and inhibit damage to the hydraulic ram and/or container during use. The system provides for the monitoring and communication of substantially all aspects of compactor operation both on-site and remotely.

Claims (30)

1. A method for controlling the operation of a waste compactor having a hydraulic ram and a hydraulic pump operative for applying hydraulic pressure to extend and retract the ram during compacting strokes of the compactor, wherein the hydraulic pump comprises a hydraulic fluid having at least one characteristic, the method comprising the steps of:

establishing extend and retract time constraints for the hydraulic ram;

operating the hydraulic ram;

monitoring one or more characteristics of the hydraulic fluid while the hydraulic ram is operated;

estimating one or more characteristics of the hydraulic fluid;

adjusting the extend and retract time constraints based on the estimated one or more characteristics of the hydraulic fluid and accounting for changes in the characteristics of the hydraulic fluid over time, during extension, retraction and stopping of the ram during compacting strokes;

detecting hydraulic fluid leaks;

wherein the hydraulic pump pumps hydraulic fluid from a reservoir and wherein the reservoir includes a hydrostatic pressure sensor; and,

providing notice of any of the hydraulic fluid leaks.

2. The method of claim 1 which further comprises the step of detecting lifting of the waste compactor.

3. The method of claim 2 which further comprises an accelerometer operatively attached to the waste compactor.

4. The method of claim 2 which further comprises the step of preventing operation of the waste compactor if the lifting of the waste compactor is detected.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising communication means for remotely monitoring the waste compactor.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the communication means includes a communication link that transmits information to a remote location in substantially real time for addressing operational or maintenance needs of the waste compactor.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the communication link transmits the information to a remote location in substantially real time for proactive, accurate prediction and scheduling of upcoming maintenance.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the information is sent when at least one or more set triggers is obtained.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the triggers are selected from the group consisting of: a set number of hours of running time for the waste compactor since installation or maintenance; a set number of compactions performed; and a set of scheduled intervals.

10. The method of claim 1 which further comprises the step of monitoring the need for maintenance of the waste compactor.

11. The method of claim 10 which further comprises the step of providing notice when maintenance of the waste compactor should be performed.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of providing notice is done once one or more preset triggers is obtained.

13. The method of claim 10 which further comprises the step of electronically recording maintenance records.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the maintenance records are recorded onsite.

15. The method of claim 10 which further comprises the step of receiving notice of an active compactor maintenance event.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of receiving notice comprises the step of receiving an identification of the compactor maintenance event.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the identification comprises a numerical code.

18. The method of claim 16 which further comprises the step of preventing operation of the hydraulic ram while the compactor maintenance event is active.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:

receiving notice of the termination of the compactor maintenance event; and

allowing operation of the hydraulic ram.

20. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of providing an electronic maintenance checklist onsite.
