Abstract

A shaft bushing is provided that can be automatically cleaned in place, without requiring manual cleaning by a technician, and that can be used with food processing equipment. The shaft bushing has a body with a circumferential sidewall, opposing ends, and an opening in at least one of the ends the can accept cleaning fluid thereinto. The opening may be defined by ends of longitudinal grooves that extend along the bushing and that may direct the cleaning fluid between the bushing body and the support structure, and/or the bushing body and the shaft.

Claims (20)

1. A bushing and shat arrangement for use with a clean-in-place system comprising:

a shaft having an exposed end with an exposed terminal surface of the shaft defining an angled outer surface defining a variable diameter of the exposed end of the shaft with a relatively smaller diameter defined at an outermost portion of the exposed end of the shaft;

a bushing including a bushing body having

a circumferential side wall (i) an outer surface that engages a support structure for holding the bushing in a generally fixed position, and (ii) an inner surface that defines an outer periphery of a bore that extends longitudinally into the bushing body, wherein the bore concentrically holds the shaft within the bushing body; and

opposing inner and outer ends, wherein the outer end of the bushing body is arranged toward the angled outer surface of the end of the shaft and includes an opening that accepts a cleaning fluid thereinto for delivering the cleaning fluid between the bushing body and the shaft, and wherein the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft and the opening at the outer end of the bushing body are configured to direct the cleaning fluid along the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft and into the opening at the outer end of the bushing body; and

wherein the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft is defined by a rounded end surface of the shaft that is spaced from a sprayer facing the exposed end of the shaft and configured to deliver the cleaning fluid onto the rounded end surface of the shaft.

2. A bushing and shaft arrangement for use with a clean-in-place system comprising:

a shaft having an exposed end with an exposed terminal surface of the shaft defining an angled outer surface defining a variable diameter of the exposed end of the shaft with a relatively smaller diameter outer portion of the exposed end of the shaft and a relatively larger inner portion of the exposed end of the shaft that is spaced inwardly from the relatively smaller diameter outer portion of the exposed end of the shaft;

a sprayer that is spaced from and configured to deliver a cleaning fluid to the exposed end of the shaft during a clean-in-place cleaning procedure; and

a bushing including a bushing body having

a circumferential side wall with (i) an outer surface that engages a support structure for holding the bushing in a generally fixed position, and (ii) an inner surface that defines an outer periphery of a bore that extends longitudinally into the bushing body, wherein the bore concentrically holds the shaft within the bushing body; and

opposing inner and outer ends, wherein the outer end of the bushing body is arranged toward the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft and includes an opening adjacent the relatively larger diameter inner portion of the exposed end of the shaft that accepts the cleaning fluid thereinto for delivering the cleaning fluid between the bushing body and the shaft, and wherein the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft and the opening at the outer end of the bushing body are configured to receive the cleaning fluid from the sprayer and direct the cleaning fluid along the angled outer surface of the exposed end of the shaft and into the opening at the outer end of the bushing body.

The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 2 , further comprising a longitudinal groove extending into at least one of the outer and inner surfaces of the circumferential sidewall and in a generally longitudinal direction with respect to the bushing body, an end of the longitudinal groove being defined by the opening in the at least one of the ends of the bushing body so that cleaning fluid that is accepted into the opening can flow along the longitudinal groove.

4. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 3 , wherein multiple longitudinal grooves that are spaced from each other extend into the at least one of the outer and inner surfaces of the circumferential side wall.

5. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 3 , the bushing body further comprising a flange that extends radially from a portion of the circumferential side wall, the flange engaging the support structure for restricting movement of the bushing.

6. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 5 , the flange further comprising a circumferential groove that extends into an outer surface of the flange.

7. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 5 , wherein the flange extends from one of the ends of the bushing body.

8. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 7 , wherein the longitudinal groove extends (i) into and along the outer surface of the circumferential sidewall, and (ii) into and along an outer surface of the flange.

9. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 8 , wherein the groove defines a depth that is relatively deeper at the flange and relatively less deep at the outer surface of the circumferential side wall.

10. The bushing and shaft arrangement of claim 9 , wherein a bottom surface of the groove is spaced a generally constant distance from a longitudinal axis of the bushing body of the bushing.
