Abstract

A knitted scaffold comprising at least two silk yarns in a knit direction and a yarn member diagonal to the knit direction to thereby provide a knitted fabric or mesh for surgical use that can retain its shape and/or resist collapse when opposing forces are applied at an angle from the knit direction. The knitted scaffold may include at least two yarns laid in a knit direction and engaging each other to define a plurality of nodes. The at least two yarns can include a first yarn and a second yarn extending between and forming loops about two nodes. The second yarn has a higher tension at the two nodes than the first yarn. The second yarn substantially prevents the first yarn from moving at the two nodes and substantially prevents the knitted mesh from unraveling at the nodes.

Claims (9)

1. A knitted silk scaffold comprising:

(a) a first set of yarns and a second set of yarns, the first set of yarns interlacing with the second set of yarns to define nodes, the first set of yarns and the second set of yarns alternately applied in a wale direction to form staggered loops, wherein the alternating application of the first set of yarns and the second set of yarns causes the first set of yarns to have different tensions relative to the second set of yarns at the nodes, and the difference in tension substantially preventing the knitted scaffold from unraveling at the nodes; and

(b) a third set of yarns diagonal to a knit direction of the first and second set of yarns, to assist scaffold shape retention;

wherein each of the first set of yarns, the second set of yarns, and the third set of yarns consist essentially of a sericin-depleted silk.

2. The knitted scaffold according to claim 1 , wherein the diagonal yarns are at a 45 degree to 60 degree angle from the knit direction.

3. The knitted scaffold according to claim 1 , wherein the diagonal yarns are in a single plane.

4. The knitted scaffold according to claim 1 , wherein the diagonal yarns are in two planes.

5. The knitted scaffold according to claim 1 , wherein the first set of yarns and the second set of yarns have different diameters.

6. The knitted scaffold according to claim 1 , wherein the first set of yarns and the second set of yarns have different elastic properties.
