Abstract

Compounds of the formula: are described, along with pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds, and methods of using the compounds to prevent and to treat cancer in mammals, including humans.

Claims (34)

1. A compound of Formula I:

wherein X is CH 2 ; Y is C 1 -C 6 alkylene; and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen,

wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of H, COOH, and C 1 -C 6 -hydroxyalkyl;

R 2 is selected from the group consisting of H and ═O;

or a salt thereof.

2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R is hydrogen.

A pharmaceutical composition for inhibiting formation of breast cancer and treating breast cancer in mammals, the composition comprising an effective cancer cell growth-inhibiting amount of a compound according to claim 1 , or a pharmaceutically-suitable salt thereof, optionally in combination with a pharmaceutically-suitable carrier.

11. The composition of claim 10 , comprising the compound wherein R is hydrogen.

19. A method of inhibiting formation of breast cancer and treating breast cancer in mammals, the method comprising administering a cancer cell growth-inhibiting amount of a compound according to claim 1 , or a pharmaceutically-suitable salt thereof, to a patient in need thereof.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein a compound according to claim 1 wherein R is hydrogen is administered to the patient.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein a compound according to claim 1 wherein R is

is administered to the patient.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein a compound wherein R 1 is H is administered to the patient.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein a compound wherein R 1 is COOH is administered to the patient.

25. The method of claim 19 , wherein a compound according to claim 1 wherein R is
