Abstract

A linear actuator is provided that includes a housing having an input member supported for rotation therein. An output member travels linearly along the input member when the input member is rotated relative to the output member. A guide rail extends along an inner surface of the housing. The output member engages the guide rail to prevent rotation of the output member.

Claims (21)

1. A linear actuator comprising:

a housing;

an input member that is supported for rotation within the housing;

an output member that travels linearly along the input member when the input member is rotated relative to the output member;

a guide rail that extends along an inner surface of the housing, wherein the output member engages the guide rail to prevent rotation of the output member; and

a mounting plate and a motor, wherein the linear actuator and the motor are supported on the mounting plate relative to one another, and wherein a position of the motor is adjustable relative to the linear actuator;

wherein the mounting plate includes at least one adjustment pin that selectively controls the position of the motor relative to the linear actuator; and

wherein the mounting plate includes a plurality of slots with fasteners disposed therein for adjustably supporting the motor on the mounting plate, and the at least one adjustment pin extends into one of the slots for engagement with the respective fastener.

2. The linear actuator of claim 1 , wherein the guide rail is secured to the inner surface of the housing by a plurality of fasteners.

3. The linear actuator of claim 1 , wherein the output member receives the guide rail in mating fashion.

4. The linear actuator of claim 3 , wherein the output member defines a cross-sectional shape that corresponds in mating fashion with a cross-sectional shape of the guide rail.

5. The linear actuator of claim 4 , wherein the output member and the guide rail define a mating dove-tail shaped configuration.

6. The linear actuator of claim 1 , wherein the output member includes a guide that engages the guide rail.

7. The linear actuator of claim 6 , wherein the guide receives the guide rail in mating fashion.

8. The linear actuator of claim 7 , wherein the guide defines a cross-sectional shape that corresponds in mating fashion with a cross-sectional shape of the guide rail.

9. The linear actuator of claim 8 , wherein the guide and the guide rail define a mating dove-tail shaped configuration.

10. The linear actuator of claim 6 , wherein the guide is secured to an outer surface of the output member.

11. The linear actuator of claim 6 , wherein the guide includes at least one bearing element that is disposed between the guide rail and the guide.

12. The linear actuator of claim 6 , wherein the guide includes at least one guide bushing that is disposed between the guide rail and the guide.

13. The linear actuator of claim 6 , wherein the guide includes a fitting that is adapted to provide lubrication between the guide rail and the guide.

14. The linear actuator of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustment pin is disposed within a threaded aperture that extends into an edge of the mounting plate.
