Abstract

Administration of a monoclonal Ab (mAb) that specifically targets IL-1α is useful to treating articular and extra-articular symptoms of arthritis.

Claims (22)

1 . A method for treating an inflammatory pathology associated with arthritis in a human subject, the method comprising the step of administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and an amount of an anti-IL-1α antibody effective to reduce at least one symptom of the inflammatory pathology in the subject.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one symptom is joint inflammation.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the joint inflammation is in the wrist of the subject.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the joint inflammation is in the shoulder of the subject.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one symptom is inflammation of the eye.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the inflammation is uveitis.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the anti-IL-1α antibody is a monoclonal antibody.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the monoclonal antibody is an IgG1.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the monoclonal antibody comprises a complementarity determining region of MABp1.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the monoclonal antibody is MABp1.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered by injection.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is injected into an inflamed joint.

13 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered to the eye topically.

14 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered to the eye by injection.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the anti-IL-1α antibody effective to reduce at least one symptom of the inflammatory pathology in the subject is sufficient to raise the subject's peripheral blood concentration of anti-IL-1α antibody to at least 4 micrograms/ml.

16 . A method of inducing monocyte vacuolization in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject an amount of an anti-IL-1α antibody effective to induce monocyte vacuolization in the subject.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the subject has arthritis.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the anti-IL-1α antibody is a monoclonal antibody.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the monoclonal antibody is an IgG1.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the monoclonal antibody comprises a complementarity-determining region of MABp1.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the monoclonal antibody is MABp1.

22 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the amount of the anti-IL-1α antibody administered to the subject is sufficient to raise the subject's peripheral blood concentration of anti-IL-1α antibody to at least 4 micrograms/ml.
