Abstract

A full-color AM OLED includes a transparent substrate, a color filter positioned on an upper surface of the substrate, and a metal oxide thin film transistor backpanel positioned in overlying relationship on the color filter and defining an array of pixels. An array of OLEDs is formed on the backpanel and positioned to emit light downwardly through the backpanel, the color filter, and the substrate in a full-color display. Light emitted by each OLED includes a first emission band with wavelengths extending across the range of two of the primary colors and a second emission band with wavelengths extending across the range of the remaining primary color. The color filter includes for each pixel, two zones separating the first emission band into two separate primary colors and a third zone passing the second emission band.

Claims (20)

a color filter positioned on an upper surface of the substrate;

a metal oxide thin film transistor backpanel positioned in overlying relationship on the color filter and defining an array of pixels;

an array of organic light emitting devices formed on the backpanel and positioned to emit light downwardly through the backpanel, the color filter, and the substrate in a full-color display, the light emitted by each organic light emitting device including the wavelength ranges of three primary colors, and each organic light emitting device including a first emission band with wavelengths substantially extending across the range of two of the primary colors of the three primary colors and a second emission band with wavelengths substantially extending across the range of the remaining primary color of the three primary colors; and

the color filter including at least three primary color zones corresponding to the three primary colors of the array of organic light emitting devices for each pixel in the array of pixels, two zones of the at least three primary color zones separating the first emission band into two separate primary colors of the three primary colors and a third zone of the at least three primary color zones passing the second emission band as a third primary color of the three primary colors.

2. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 1 wherein one of the first and the second emission bands is defined by an un-patterned layer of organic material and the other of the first and the second emission bands is defined by an area patterned on the un-patterned layer.

3. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 2 wherein the first emission layer is un-patterned and constructed to emit blue-green light and the second emission layer is patterned on the first emission layer and constructed to emit red light.

4. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 2 wherein the first emission layer is un-patterned and constructed to emit blue light and the second emission layer is patterned on the first emission layer and constructed to emit yellow (green-red) light.

5. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 1 wherein the two zones of the at least three primary color zones include a set of long-wavelength-pass color filter and a short-wavelength-pass color filter.

6. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 1 wherein the light emitted by each organic light emitting device includes the wavelength ranges of three primary colors plus a fourth color, and each pixel of the color filter includes the three primary color zones plus a fourth color zone corresponding to the fourth color emitted by each organic light emitting device.

7. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 6 wherein the fourth color zone of each pixel of the color filter is constructed to pass the fourth color directly.

8. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 1 wherein the color filter includes a black matrix surrounding each of the color zones.

9. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 1 wherein each organic light emitting device of the array of organic light emitting devices includes a first emission layer designed to emit the first emission band and a second emission layer patterned on the first emission layer and designed to emit the second emission band.

10. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 9 wherein the patterned second emission layer includes a printed or coated layer formed by one of inkjet printing, solution dispensing, transfer printing, offset printing, laser induced thermal transfer, and contact printing.

11. A full-color active matrix organic light emitting display as claimed in claim 9 wherein the three primary colors are red, green, and blue, and the first emission band extends in a range of approximately 400 nm to 600 nm, and the second emission band extends above approximately 600 nm.
