Abstract

A method of manufacturing a forceps includes providing first and second jaw members and depositing an electrically-conductive tissue sealing plate atop each jaw member via vapor deposition. The jaw members are then coupled to one another to permit movement of one (or both) of the jaw members relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue between the tissue sealing plates thereof.

Claims (28)

1. A method of manufacturing a jaw member of a forceps, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an insulator and a jaw frame;

forming an electrically-conductive tissue sealing plate atop the insulator via vapor deposition; and

engaging the insulator to the jaw frame.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing the insulator includes forming the insulator via injection molding.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the vapor deposition comprises physical vapor deposition.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the vapor deposition comprises chemical vapor deposition.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of molding a wire to the insulator prior to forming the tissue sealing plate atop the insulator.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the tissue sealing plate is formed atop the insulator such that the tissue sealing plate is disposed in electrical communication with the wire.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of engaging comprises snap-fitting.

8. A method of manufacturing a forceps, comprising:

providing first and second jaw members;

depositing an electrically-conductive tissue sealing plate atop each jaw member via vapor deposition; and

coupling the jaw members to one another to permit movement of at least one of the jaw members relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue between the tissue sealing plates thereof.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the vapor deposition comprises physical vapor deposition.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the vapor deposition comprises chemical vapor deposition.

11. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the tissue sealing plates are deposited atop insulators of the jaw members.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising the step of forming the insulators via injection molding.

13. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising the step of engaging each of the insulators within a jaw frame of the jaw member thereof.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the step of engaging comprises snap-fitting.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein each of the jaw frames includes a proximal flange extending proximally therefrom.

16. The method according to claim 15 , further comprising pivotably coupling the proximal flanges to one another to permit movement of at least one of the jaw members relative to the other between the spaced-apart position and the approximated position.

17. The method according to claim 15 , further comprising the step of engaging the insulator to a jaw frame.

18. The method according to claim 15 , further comprising the step of coupling a wire to the insulator prior to depositing the tissue sealing plate thereon such that, upon depositing the tissue sealing plate atop the insulator, the wire is electrically coupled to the tissue sealing plate for providing electrosurgical energy to the tissue sealing plate.

19. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising the step of molding a wire within at least one of the jaw members such that the wire is disposed in electrically communication with the tissue sealing plate thereof for supplying electrosurgical energy to the tissue sealing plate.

20. A method of manufacturing a jaw member of a forceps, the method comprising the steps of:

injection molding an insulator; and

vapor depositing an electrically-conductive tissue sealing plate atop the insulator.
