Abstract

A fastening strip for touch fasteners is provided which includes a corrugated portion as well as fastening elements. The corrugated portion allows the strip to be bent in a plane perpendicular as well as parallel with the longitudinal axis of the strip such that it may be applied to curved surfaces and remain substantially flat. Fastening elements such as hooks, loops, mushroom-shaped, bulbous and double hooks may be included on both sides of the strip and on the walls of the channels that form the corrugations as well as between the corrugations. The corrugated fastening strips may be useful for automotive seating and diaper applications. Processes for forming the corrugated fastening strip area also disclosed.

Claims (38)

1. A touch fastening strip comprising:

a corrugated strip defining an undulating surface and forming a plurality of channels and a base portion between adjacent channels, the corrugated strip defining a plane, the corrugated strip constructed and arranged to be bendable within the plane and out of the plane, and such that when the corrugated strip is bendable within the plane, the corrugated strip can remain in the plane;

fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of a top of said undulating surface; and

one or more openings formed through said strip in the base portion.

2. The fastening strip of claim 1 including a removable protective material that includes a protective cover applied to said fastening elements.

3. The touch fastening strip of claim 2 wherein said removable protective material includes metallic material.

4. The fastening strip of claim 1 including a removable protective material that encapsulates at least a portion of said fastening elements.

5. The touch fastening strip of claim 4 wherein said removable protective material that encapsulates at least a portion of said fastening elements does not contact a top surface of said strip in said base portion.

6. The protective material of claim 4 wherein said removable protective material includes metallic material.

7. The fastening strip of claim 1 wherein the fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of the undulating surface defines a fastening location, wherein a thickness of said undulating surface of the corrugated strip at said fastening location is relatively thicker than adjacent locations of said undulating surface of the corrugated strip.

8. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein said plurality of channels have a height in ranging between approximately 0.001 inches and approximately 2.00 inches.

9. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein said channels have a width ranging between approximately 0.005 inches and approximately 2.50 inches.

10. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein the fastening elements project from a top surface of said channels and a top surface of said valley.

11. The touch fasting strip of claim 1 wherein said fastening elements comprise loops.

12. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein said corrugated strip is formed from a material that has a flex modulus of less than or equal to 500,000 psi.

13. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 , in combination with an automotive seat cushion, wherein said corrugated strip is positioned on said automotive seat cushion and wherein foam forming said cushion penetrates said openings and anchors said strip to said foam.

14. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein at least some of said channels comprise a planar top wall and a first planar side wall connected to said planar top and an opposing second planar side wall connected to said planar top wall.

15. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 wherein the plurality of channels extends uniformly across a width of the corrugated strip.

16. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 further comprising a metallic material cooperating with said corrugated strip.

17. The touch fastening strip of claim 1 further comprising fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of a bottom of said undulating surface at said base portions.

18. A touch fastening strip in combination with an automotive seat cushion, comprising:

a corrugated strip defining an undulating surface and forming a plurality of channels and a base portion between adjacent channels, the corrugated strip defining a plane, the corrugated strip constructed and arranged to be bendable within the plane and out of the plane, and such that when the corrugated strip is bendable within the plane, the corrugated strip can remain in the plane; and

fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of a top of said undulating surface; and

an automotive seat cushion, wherein said touch fastening strip is positioned in the seat cushion in a bent configuration.

19. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein the fastening elements project from a top surface of said channels and a top surface of said base portion.

20. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein said fastening elements comprise loops.

21. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein said corrugated strip is formed from a material that has a flex modulus of less than or equal to 500,000 psi.

22. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein the fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of the undulating surface defines a fastening location, wherein a thickness of said undulating surface of the corrugated strip at said fastening location is relatively thicker than adjacent locations of said undulating surface of the corrugated strip.

23. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein a removable protective material is applied to said corrugated strip to temporarily shield said fastening elements.

24. The touch fastening strip of claim 23 wherein said removable protective material comprises polymer film material.

25. The touch fastening strip of claim 23 wherein said removable protective material includes metallic material.

26. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 further comprising a removable protective material encapsulating at least a portion of said fastening elements.

27. The touch fastening strip of claim 26 wherein said removable protective material encapsulating at least a portion of said fastening element does not contact a top surface of said strip in said base portion.

28. The touch fastening strip of claim 26 wherein said removable protective material includes metallic material.

29. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein at least some of said channels comprise a planar top wall and a first planar side wall connected to said planar top and an opposing second planar side wall connected to said planar top wall.

30. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 wherein the plurality of channels extends uniformly across a width of the corrugated strip.

31. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 further comprising a metallic material cooperating with said corrugated strip.

32. The touch fastening strip of claim 18 further comprising fastening elements formed on and projecting from at least portions of a bottom of said undulating surface at said base portions.
