Abstract

The present invention relates to ophthalmic systems and coatings comprising a selective light wavelength filter, wherein said selective filter provides improved contrast sensitivity.

Claims (76)

1 . An ophthalmic system comprising:

an ophthalmic lens selected from the group consisting of a spectacle lens, contact lens, intra-ocular lens, corneal inlay, corneal onlay, corneal graft, and corneal tissue, and

a selective light wavelength filter that blocks 5-50% of light in the range of 400-460 nm and transmits at least 80% of light in the range of 460-700 nm.

2 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 1 , wherein said selective light wavelength filter comprises a coating on said ophthalmic lens.

3 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating has a photopic luminous transmission of at least about 85% in the range of 460-700 nm.

4 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 3 , wherein said coating has an average transmission of 80% or greater of light within a range of from 400 nm-700 nm.

5 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 4 , wherein said coating has a Soret band.

6 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is a hard exterior coating.

7 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is an interior primer coating.

8 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 7 , wherein said primer coating promotes adhesion of a hard coat to the substrate.

9 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is applied by any one of spin-coating, dip-coating, spray-coating, evaporation, sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition.

10 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is a spectacle lens.

11 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is a contact lens.

12 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is an intraocular lens.

13 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is a sunglass lens.

14 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens inhibits UV light wavelengths.

15 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens inhibits IR light wavelengths.

16 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is a scratch-resistant coating.

17 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is an anti-reflective (AR) coating.

18 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 17 , wherein said AR coating comprises a single layer of TiO 2 .

19 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is a hydrophobic coating.

20 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is color-balanced.

21 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is color-balanced.

22 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating is formed by one of spin coating, dip coating, spray coating, evaporation, sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition.

23 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating comprises coumarin.

24 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating comprises perylene.

25 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating comprises magnesium tetraphenylporphyrin.

26 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating contains porphyrin or a porphyrin derivative.

27 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating contains magnesium.

28 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating comprises yellow orange.

29 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 2 , wherein said coating comprises acridyne.

30 . A coating for an ophthalmic lens that blocks 5-50% of light in the range of 400-460 nm and transmits at least 80% of light in the range of 460-700 nm.

31 . The coating according to claim 30 , having a photopic luminous transmission of at least about 85% in the range of 460-700 nm.

32 . The coating according to claim 31 , having an average transmission of 80% or greater of light within a range of from 400 nm-700 nm.

33 . The coating according to claim 30 , having a Soret band.

30 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is a hard coat.

31 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is a primer coat.

32 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating inhibits UV light wavelengths.

33 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating inhibits IR light wavelengths.

34 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is a scratch resistant coating.

35 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is an anti-reflective coating.

36 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is a hydrophobic coating.

37 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating promotes adhesion to a substrate.

38 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating is a filter.

39 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating formed by one of spin coating, dip coating, spray coating, evaporation, sputtering, or chemical vapor deposition.

40 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating comprises coumarin.

41 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating comprises perylene.

42 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating comprises magnesium tetraphenylporphyrin.

43 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating contains porphyrin or aporphyrin derivative.

44 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating contains magnesium.

45 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating comprises yellow orange.

46 . The coating according to claim 30 , whereby the coating comprises acridyne.

47 . An ophthalmic system comprising:

an ophthalmic lens selected from the group consisting of a spectacle lens, contact lens, intra-ocular lens, corneal inlay, corneal onlay, corneal graft, and corneal tissue, said ophthalmic lens including a blue-absorbing dye that blocks 5-50% of light in the range of 400-460 nm and transmits at least 80% of light in the range of 460-700 nm; and

a color-balancing coating on said ophthalmic lens.

48 . The coating according to claim 47 , whereby the coating has a Soret band.

49 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is a hard exterior coating.

50 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is an interior primer coating.

51 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 49 , wherein said primer coating promotes adhesion of a hard coat to the substrate.

52 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is applied by any one of spin-coating, dip-coating, spray-coating, evaporation, sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition.

53 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is a scratch-resistant coating.

54 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is an anti-reflective (AR) coating.

55 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 53 , wherein said AR coating comprises a single layer of TiO 2 .

56 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is a hydrophobic coating.

57 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating is formed by one of spin coating, dip coating, spray coating, evaporation, sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition.

58 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating comprises coumarin.

59 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating comprises perylene.

60 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating comprises magnesium tetraphenylporphyrin.

61 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating contains porphyrin or a porphyrin derivative.

62 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating contains magnesium.

63 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating comprises yellow orange.

64 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 47 , wherein said coating comprises acridyne.

65 . An ophthalmic system comprising:

a transparent material; and

a coating on said transparent material, said coating a selective light wavelength filter that blocks 5-50% of light in the range of 400-460 nm and transmits at least 80% of light in the range of 460-700 nm.

66 . The ophthalmic system according to claim 65 , wherein said transparent material comprises any one from among a group consisting of a camera flash lens, camera lens, artificial lighting lens, instrument lens, and vehicle windshield.
