Abstract

A method and apparatus for providing a strobe alarm unit employing at least one light emitting diode.

Claims (31)

1. A strobe notification appliance, comprising:

at least one broad distribution light emitting diode (LED), wherein the at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one high current density LED;

an energy storage device for storing energy; and

a control circuit for causing said stored energy to be applied to said at least one broad distribution LED in a reduced duty cycle while providing current at a rate greater than linear to increase an amount of light emitted by the at least one broad distribution LED and to reduce heat build up at a p-n junction of the at least one broad distribution LED, wherein said at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one single color LED.

2. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said at least one high current density LED is capable of producing at least 15 candela.

3. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one LED device combined with a lens to produce at least 15 candela.

4. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said at least one high current density LED is capable of producing a high intensity white light.

5. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one LED device combined with a lens to produce a high intensity light.

6. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , further comprising:

a lens to widen a viewing angle of the at least one broad distribution LED.

7. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , further comprising:

a reflector to widen a light distribution pattern of the at least one broad distribution LED.

8. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , further comprising:

a voltage converter coupled to the energy storage device.

9. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , further comprising:

a current limiter coupled to the energy storage device.

10. The strobe notification appliance of claim 9 further comprising:

a buck converter coupled between the energy storage device and said at least one broad distribution LED.

11. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said control circuit comprises a microcontroller.

12. The strobe notification appliance of claim 1 , wherein said control circuit comprises an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC).

13. A strobe notification appliance, comprising:

at least one broad distribution light emitting diode (LED), wherein the at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one high current density LED;

means for storing energy; and

means for controlling said means for storing energy for applying stored energy to said at least one broad distribution LED in a reduced duty cycle while providing current at a rate greater than linear to increase an amount of light emitted by the at least one broad distribution LED and to reduce heat build up at a p-n junction of the at least one broad distribution LED, wherein said at least one broad distribution LED comprises at least one single color LED.

14. The strobe notification appliance of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for converting voltage, coupled to said means for storing energy, for stepping an input voltage.

15. The strobe notification appliance of claim 14 , wherein said means for converting voltage comprises a buck converter.

16. The strobe notification appliance of claim 14 , wherein said means for converting voltage comprises at least one current limiting means.

17. The strobe notification appliance of claim 13 , wherein said means for controlling comprises a microcontroller or an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC).

18. The strobe notification appliance of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for switching the stored energy to said at least one broad distribution LED at a pulse duration determined by said means for controlling.
