Abstract

A simulation environment for running a process simulation used to validate an industrial control program. The simulation environment exposes the I/O module configurations defined in the control program and retrieves module configuration information therefrom. This I/O module configuration information is combined with generic, module-specific I/O module profiles to create a pool of available controller I/O points, which can be selectively associated with I/O points in the simulation to create an I/O point mapping. During control program validation, simulated I/O data is exchanged between the process simulation and the I/O module instances in the controller in accordance with the I/O point mapping.

Claims (35)

1. A system for interfacing a simulation with an industrial control program, comprising:

a processor, coupled to a memory, that executes or facilitates execution of computer-executable components, comprising:

a configuration retrieval component configured to retrieve, from an industrial control program, I/O module configuration data that defines an I/O module configured for use in an industrial controller;

a connection pool component configured to retrieve a generic I/O module profile corresponding to a type of the I/O module identified by the I/O module configuration data and modify the generic I/O module profile based on the I/O module configuration data to yield one or more available I/O point definitions; and

an I/O kernel configured to exchange simulation data between the simulation and an I/O module instance corresponding to the I/O module based on the one or more available I/O point definitions.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more available I/O pointdefinitions define respective communication paths from the simulation to one or more available I/O points of the I/O module instance in the industrial controller.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the connection pool component is further configured to retrieve the generic I/O module profile from a directory service that maintains a plurality of generic I/O module profiles corresponding to respective I/O module types.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the generic I/O module profile defines one or more characteristics of the type of the I/O module, the one or more characteristics including at least one of an I/O point count, a communication characteristic, a data processing function, or a graphical representation.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more available I/O point definitions comprise connection information that allows the I/O kernel to establish a connection with one or more I/O points of the I/O module instance in the industrial control program.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable components further comprise a simulation development interface component configured to display one or more available I/O points corresponding to the one or more available I/O point definitions, and to receive mapping input that selectively associates an available I/O point, of the available I/O points, with a simulation I/O point of the simulation to yield I/O point mapping data.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the I/O kernel is further configured to exchange the simulation data with the I/O module instance in accordance with the I/O point mapping data.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the configuration retrieval component, the connection pool component, and the I/O kernel are further configured to reside on at least one of a simulation workstation or a simulation module, and to communicate with the industrial controller over a network or a backplane of the industrial controller.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the configuration retrieval component, the connection pool component, and the simulated I/O kernel are further configured to reside on a common workstation with the industrial control program.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable components further comprise a synchronization component configured to adjust a simulation clock of the simulation to converge with a controller clock of the industrial controller.

11. A method for establishing a simulation data link, comprising:

retrieving, by a system comprising a processor, I/O module configuration data from a control program of an industrial controller;

retrieving a generic I/O module profile corresponding to an I/O module type identified by the I/O module configuration data;

modifying the generic I/O module profile based on the I/O module configuration data to yield one or more I/O point definitions; and

employing the one or more I/O module point definitions to establish a communicative link between a simulated I/O point in an automation system simulation and an I/O point of an I/O module instance corresponding to the I/O module configuration data and residing on the industrial controller.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising generating the one or more I/O point definitions to comprise respective one or more communication path definitions that allow the automation system simulation to exchange data with one or more available I/O points of the I/O module instance.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising establishing the communicative link between the simulated I/O point and the I/O point of the I/O module instance based on the one or more communication path definitions.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the establishing the communicative link comprises creating an I/O point mapping between the simulated I/O point and the I/O point of the I/O module instance based on selection input that associates the simulated I/O point with the I/O point of the I/O module instance.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising exchanging simulation data between the simulated I/O point and the I/O point of the I/O module instance in accordance with the I/O point mapping.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising packaging simulated I/O data generated by the automation system simulation using common industrial protocol to yield packaged data and sending the packaged data over the communicative link.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions that, in response to execution, cause a computer to perform operations, comprising:
