Abstract

The present invention relates generally to lens design and, more particularly, to a method for designing, evaluating and optimizing ophthalmic lenses and laser vision correction in order to optimally manage issues resulting from, or related to, halos.

Claims (26)

1 . A method of designing an ophthalmic lens comprising the steps of:

determining wavefront aberrations of a patient or group of patients;

calculating simulated retinal images of extended objects using the wavefront aberrations; and

optimizing the ophthalmic lens based on an assessment of the simulated retinal images.

2 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the extended objects represent a light source in a dark environment.

3 . A method according to claim 2 , wherein the light source represents a headlight of a car.

4 . A method according to claim 1 , in which the wavefront aberrations are based on corneal topography data.

5 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the assessment is based on a comparison of a simulated halo image with a (set of) reference halo(s).

6 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein optimizing the ophthalmic lens is comprised of optimizing the IOL aberration profile.

7 . A method of designing an intraocular lens capable of reducing halos comprising the steps of:

utilizing a model that characterizes a simulated halo image;

optimizing the design of the intraocular lens in order to reduce the halo image.

8 . A method according to claim 7 , wherein the simulated halo image is calculated from corneal aberrations.

9 . A method according to claim 8 , further comprising the step of comparing the simulated halo image with a reference halo.

10 . A method according to claim 7 , wherein optimizing the design is comprised of optimizing the IOL aberration profile.

11 . A method of reducing halos associated with intraocular lenses comprising the steps of:

utilizing a model that characterizes a simulated halo image;

optimizing laser vision correction so as minimize the halo.

12 . A method according to claim 11 , wherein the simulated halo image is calculated from corneal aberrations.

13 . A method according to claim 12 , further comprising the step of comparing the simulated halo image with a (set of) reference halo(s).

14 . An intraocular lens comprising:

an anterior surface and an opposing posterior surface, wherein at least one of the surfaces of the ophthalmic lens is characterized by a phase profile configured to modify the wavefront aberration in order to shape the halo and intensity profile in order to minimize bother from the halo.

15 . The intraocular lens of claim 14 , wherein the phase profile modifies spherical aberration.

16 . The intraocular lens of claim 14 , wherein the phase profile modifies coma.

17 . The intraocular lens of claim 14 , wherein the phase profile modifies trefoil.

18 . The intraocular lens of claim 14 , wherein the phase profile modifies the product of astigmatism and coma.
