Abstract

The present invention generally relates to a wet wipe or sheet that is suitable for contacting the skin and removing mucus from the skin. More specifically, the present invention relates to a wet wipe having an aqueous saline component suitable for dissolving and removing mucus in combination with the fabric matrix of the wet wipe. Typically, the fabric matrix of the wet wipe has a capacity of about 125 grams of solution per square meter, and it is impregnated with the aqueous saline solution to a level at or below approximately 80% of the absorbent capacity of the matrix.

Claims (16)

1. A method of delivering a decongestant formulation to skin in or around a nose comprising:

providing an absorbent matrix of mechanically-bonded fibers impregnated with an alcohol-free aqueous solution in an amount less than approximately 80 percent of the absorbent capacity of the matrix but sufficient to deliver the solution to a surface, the matrix having unused absorbent capacity and a basis weight of 10 to 100 grams per square meter, the solution comprising sodium chloride as a decongestant in a therapeutically effective amount;

applying the decongestant in or around a nose by wiping skin around the nose with the absorbent matrix; and

absorbing mucus with the unused absorbent capacity of the matrix;

wherein the alcohol-free aqueous solution comprises an inorganic salt in a concentration of 0.1 grams to 9 grams per 100 grams of the solution.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the solution comprises an emollient, and a surfactant.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the matrix is a nonwoven fabric.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the fabric is comprised of cotton.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the fabric is synthetic.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein multiple matrices are provided in a substantially air-tight storage container having a re-sealable opening.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the matrix is provided in a single-use container.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the solution further includes one or more of: aloe vera, lavender, chamomile, and an herbal additive.

9. A method of delivering a decongestant formulation to skin in or around a nose comprising:

providing an absorbent matrix of a basis weight in the range of 10 to 100 grams per square meters of mechanically bonded fibers impregnated with an alcohol-free aqueous solution, the solution comprising sodium chloride as a decongestant in a therapeutically effective amount, wherein the absorbent matrix has unused absorbent capacity, but the amount of solution is sufficient to deliver the solution to a surface;

applying the decongestant in or around a nose by wiping skin around the nose with the absorbent matrix; and

absorbing mucus with the unused absorbent capacity of the matrix.
