Abstract

A method is provided for regulating tooth movement, comprising extra-orally administering an effective amount of light transdermally to the maxillary or mandibular alveolar bone of a patient in need thereof. The repetitive dosage can be in the range of 24 J/cm to 200 J/cm. The light can have a wavelength in the range of about 585 nm to about 665 nm, or about 815 nm to about 895 nm. Light having a first wavelength can be administered to a first selected region of the alveolar bone, and light having a second wavelength can be administered to a second selected region of the alveolar bone to selectively regulate tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. An apparatus useful for applying light therapy extra-orally is also provided.

11 . (canceled)

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying an orthodontic appliance to one or more of the patient's teeth prior to extra-orally administering the light.

13 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying an orthodontic appliance to one or more of the patient's teeth subsequent to extra-orally administering the light.

14 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying an orthodontic appliance to one or more of the patient's teeth concurrently with extra-orally administering the light.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises removing an orthodontic appliance from one or more of the patient's teeth.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the removing includes removing an orthodontic appliance from one or more of the patient's teeth after extra-orally administering the effective amount of light.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the patient's teeth are at least partially covered with a tooth mask that blocks at least some of the light that is extra-orally administered.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light radiates from a plurality of light sources that contact the patient's face.

19 . (canceled)

20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light increases maxillary or mandibular alveolar bone growth.

21 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount of light decreases maxillary or mandibular alveolar bone resorption.

22 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the light administration results in the stimulation of osteoclasts or osteoblasts.

23 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is extra-orally administered following oral surgery.

24 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light has an intensity of at least 10 mW/cm 2 .

25 . (canceled)

26 . A method of administering light to a region of a patient's oral tissue comprising:

providing a light-therapy apparatus comprising a support sized and shaped to engage with features of the patient's face and one or more light source supported by the support;

engaging the support of the light-therapy apparatus with one or more features of the patient's face;

determining whether a position of the one or more light sources needs to be adjusted in order to administer a predetermined intensity of light to the region of the patient's oral tissue;

depending on said determination, adjusting or maintaining the position of the one or more light sources; and

administering light to the region at the predetermined intensity.

27 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the adjusting includes adjusting the position of the light along a length of the support of the light-therapy apparatus.

28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the adjusting includes rotating the one or more light sources about one or more axis.

29 . (canceled)

30 . The method of claim 26 wherein the light-therapy apparatus includes one or more sensors configured to measure temperature or reflectance.

31 . (canceled)

32 . The method of claim 30 , further comprising:

determining whether a light characteristic needs to be adjusted in order to administer the predetermined intensity of light to the region based on one or more signal from the one or more sensors; and

depending on said determination, adjusting or maintaining the light characteristic.

33 . A light-therapy apparatus, comprising:

a support sized and shaped to engage with features of a patient's face, at least one of a right side of the support or a left side of the support comprises a first support feature;

one or more light assembly configured to engage with the first support feature, said one or more light assemblies comprising a secondary support feature; and

a light source configured to engage with the secondary support feature, and to administer light extra-orally through a portion of the patient's face to a region within the patient's oral cavity when the apparatus is in use, the one or more light assemblies are movable along the secondary support feature.

34 . The light-therapy apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the region is mandibular alveolar bone or maxillary alveolar bone.

35 . (canceled)

36 . The light-therapy apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the light source is one of a plurality of light sources.

37 . The light-therapy apparatus of claim 36 , wherein the plurality of light sources are independently operable.

38 . The light-therapy apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the light source includes a plurality of first light emitters configured to emit light having a wavelength in the range of about 585 nm to about 665 nm, and a plurality of second light emitters configured to emit light having a wavelength in the range of about 815 nm to about 895 nm.
