Abstract

Methods for treating a migraine by cooling a patient's nasopharyngeal cavity are described. In one method, a cooling assembly is inserted into a nasal cavity through a patient's nostril. The cooling assembly includes a flexible balloon defining a chamber and a first elongate tubular member having a lumen in fluid communication with the chamber. A liquid having a temperature between about −20° C. and about 37° C. is infused through the lumen of the first elongate tubular member into the chamber, wherein the flexible balloon expands to place it in contact with the nasal cavity. In another method, an elongate member having a plurality of ports is inserted into the nasal cavity. A perfluorocarbon spray and a gas are then delivered onto a surface of the nasal cavity through the plurality of ports.

Claims (17)

1. A method for treating a migraine, comprising the steps of:

selecting a patient suffering from a migraine;

inserting an elongate member into a nasal cavity of the patient through the patient's nostril, the elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, a first lumen extending therebetween, and a plurality of ports in fluid communication with the first lumen; and

cooling the patient's nasopharyngeal cavity to treat the migraine, wherein the step of cooling comprises delivering a nebulized liquid and a gas onto a surface of the patient's nasal cavity through the plurality of ports,

wherein the liquid is nebulized at the plurality of ports within the nasal cavity, wherein the liquid evaporates at body temperature, and wherein the gas enhances evaporation of the liquid from the nasal cavity.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of delivering a drug to the patient.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the drug is delivered onto a surface of the patient's nasal cavity.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the drug is sumatriptan.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nebulized liquid has a boiling point above 37° C.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the nebulized liquid has a boiling point between about 38-300° C.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the nebulized liquid has a boiling point between about 38-200° C.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the nebulized liquid has a boiling point between about 60-150° C.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nebulized liquid is a perfluorocarbon.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the perfluorocarbon liquid comprises perfluorocarbon 2-methyl perfluoropentane.

11. The method of claim 9 , perfluorocarbon liquid comprises perfluorohexane.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gas is oxygen.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein cooling the nasopharyngeal cavity reduces the cerebral temperature of the patient by at least 1° C. in one hour.
