Abstract

A system for preparing particulate carbon fuel and using the particulate carbon fuel in a fuel cell. Carbon particles are finely divided. The finely dividing carbon particles are introduced into the fuel cell. A gas containing oxygen is introduced into the fuel cell. The finely divided carbon particles are exposed to carbonate salts, or to molten NaOH or KOH or LiOH or mixtures of NaOH or KOH or LiOH, or to mixed hydroxides, or to alkali and alkaline earth nitrates.

Claims (10)

1. A method of preparing particulate carbon fuel and using the particulate carbon fuel in a fuel cell, comprising the steps of:

finely dividing carbon particles,

introducing said finely dividing carbon particles into the fuel cell,

introducing a gas containing oxygen into the fuel cell, and

exposing said finely divided carbon particles to carbonate salts, or to molten NaOH or KOH or LiOH or mixtures of NaOH or KOH or LiOH, or to mixed hydroxides, or to alkali and alkaline earth nitrates; wherein said step of exposing said finely divided carbon particles comprises exposing said finely divided carbon particles to a mist of a low-melting eutectic of mixed hydroxides.

2. A method of preparing particulate carbon fuel and using the particulate carbon fuel in a fuel cell, comprising the steps of:

finely dividing carbon particles,

introducing said finely dividing carbon particles into the fuel cell,

introducing a gas containing oxygen into the fuel cell, and

exposing said finely divided carbon particles to carbonate salts, or to molten NaOH or KOH or LiOH or mixtures of NaOH or KOH or LiOH, or to mixed hydroxides, or to alkali and alkaline earth nitrates; wherein said step of exposing said finely divided carbon particles comprises exposing said finely divided carbon particles to a mist of a low-melting eutectic of mixed hydroxides and including the step of reacting said finely divided carbon particles and said low-melting eutectic of mixed hydroxides with carbon dioxide.
