Abstract

Separations or images relating to film or other fields may be registered using a variety of features, such as, for example: (1) correcting one or more film distortions; (2) automatically determining a transformation to reduce a film distortion; (3) applying multiple criteria of merit to a set of features to determine a set of features to use in determining a transformation; (4) determining transformations for areas in an image or a separation in a radial order; (5) comparing areas in images or separations by weighting feature pixels differently than non-feature pixels; (6) determining distortion values for transformations by applying a partial distortion measure and/or using a spiral search configuration; (7) determining transformations by using different sets of features to determine corresponding transformation parameters in an iterative manner; and (8) applying a feathering technique to neighboring areas within an image or separation.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus having stored thereon at least the following:

a first image based on first content of a first digitized film separation, the first digitized film separation being a first digitized film separation of a picture; and

a second image based on second content of a second digitized film separation, the second digitized film separation being a second digitized film separation of the picture, a film distortion corresponding to the first and second images being relatively small in comparison with a film distortion corresponding to the first and second digitized film separations, the second image being configured based on a translation of only a strict subset of the second content.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the translation of only the strict subset results from application of an alignment vector to only the strict subset.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the alignment vector is automatically determined and applied to the strict subset.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second image comprises digital information.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:

the first image comprises a first color separation,

the second image comprises a second color separation, and

displays of the first color separation and the second color separation are configured to collectively form at least part of a single resultant image.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the first color separation is a digital color separation.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second image is part of a frame in a film.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the apparatus comprises a reel.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the apparatus comprises a video.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the apparatus comprises an optical disc.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the optical disc comprises a DVD.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the apparatus comprises a computer readable medium.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the translation of only the strict subset of the second content comprises a translation of a strict subset of a prior version of the second image.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first image comprises the first digitized film separation.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second image comprises the translation.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second image comprises a feathered version of the translation.

17. A portable storage device comprising:

a medium configured to record information;

a first frame recorded on the medium and corresponding to content originally recorded using a Technicolor three-color film separation process; and

a second frame recorded on the medium and corresponding to the content originally recorded using the Technicolor three-color film separation process,

at least the first frame and the second frame being included in a sequence of frames recorded on the medium, the sequence of frames being configured to reproduce a display of the content originally recorded using the Technicolor three-color film separation process, the display of the content being substantially free of a distortion that (a) is typically present in movies originally recorded using the Technicolor three-color film separation process and (b) is noticeably present to a human eye in a corresponding sequence of frames from an original recording of the content.

18. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the distortion includes one or more of local misregistration, global misregistration, color fringing, and blurry edges.

19. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the distortion includes local misregistration, and the sequence of frames is substantially free of two different local misregistrations that are both present in the corresponding sequence of frames.

20. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the portable storage device comprises a DVD.

21. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the sequence of frames is part of a movie.

22. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the sequence of frames includes an entire movie.

23. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the sequence of frames is substantially free of multiple distortions that (a) are typically present in movies originally recorded using the Technicolor three-color film separation process and (b) are noticeably present to a human eye in the corresponding sequence of frames from the original recording of the content.

24. The portable storage device of claim 23 wherein the multiple distortions include local misregistration, global misregistration, color fringing, and blurry edges.

25. The portable storage device of claim 17 wherein the corresponding sequence of frames from the original recording of the content is a corresponding sequence of frames from a copy of the original recording of the content.
