Abstract

An electrode array which is able to be inserted to a desired depth within the cochlea to provide useful percepts for the recipient which will also preferably not cause damage to the sensitive structures of the cochlea. The electrode array is insertable through an opening in the cochlea and into at least the basal region of the cochlea and comprises an elongate carrier having a proximal end, a distal end, and a plurality of electrodes supported by the carrier at respective spaced locations thereon in a region between the proximal end and the distal end. A stabilising collar extends outwardly from the elongate carrier at or adjacent a proximal end thereof and has an abutment surface adapted to abut a portion of the cochlea surface around the cochleostomy and at least substantially prevent movement of the carrier following completion of insertion of the array into the cochlea.

Claims (13)

1. A method of inserting into a patient an electrode array of a cochlear implant system, the method comprising:

providing an electrode array having a flexible elongate carrier; a plurality of electrode contacts supported by the carrier, wherein at least two of the contacts are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the carrier; a flexible collar disposed about at least a portion of the carrier; an anchor adjacent to the distal end of the collar, the anchor adapted to be sutured to tissue or bone to reduce longitudinal rotation of the array; a pressed fascia washer adapted to contact the anchor; and a rotation indicator on the array indicating the rotational orientation of the at least two contacts, wherein the rotation indicator is located proximal to the anchor;

creating an opening anteroinferior to the round window membrane of the patient;

inserting the electrode array into the cochlea such that a distal end of the array extends to the basal turn region;

placing fascia in contact with at least a portion of the flexible collar;

anchoring the array; and

sealing the opening.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising limiting damage to the walls of the cochlea.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising substantially preserving the patient's natural capacity to detect sounds.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the opening is created at least in part by using a laser.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the array is anchored at least in part by fixing the collar to a portion of the patient's tissue or bone.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising stabilizing the array.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the array is stabilized by suturing the array to tissue or bone or both tissue and bone.
