Abstract

The present invention relates to peptides, nucleic acids and methods for transforming a bacterium belonging to the Streptococcus genus by natural competence and their use in the food and feed industry.

Claims (43)

1. An isolated peptide comprising at least 7 amino acids and at most 24 acids, wherein the isolated peptide has an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1 when the isolated peptide is 24 amino acids long and the isolated peptide comprises a portion of SEQ ID NO: 1 including at least PYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 86, when the isolated peptide includes 23 amino acids or less, and wherein said peptide induces and increases competence in a S. thermophilus strain.

2. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein the isolated peptide induces and increases competence in the S. thermophilus strain LMD-9 in which the gene encoding SEQ ID NO:1 has been inactivated.

3. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide includes at most 23 amino acids.

4. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein the C-terminal end of said isolated peptide has an amino acid sequence of AGCL SEQ ID NO: 89.

5. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein the C-terminal end of said isolated peptide has an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of: PYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 86, LPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 85, or ILPYFAGCLSEQ ID NO: 84.

The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide is selected from the group consisting of: KTLKIFVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 70, TLKIFVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 71, LKIFVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 72, KIFVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 73, IFVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 74, FVLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 75, VLFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 76, LFSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 77, FSLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 78, SLLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 79, LLIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 80, LIAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 81, and IAILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 82.

7. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide comprises the amino acid sequence LPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 85, ILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 84, or AILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 83.

8. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein the C-terminal end of said isolated peptide has an amino acid sequence of AILPYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 83.

9. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein the isolated peptide is synthetic.

An isolated peptide comprising at least 7 amino acids and at most 19 acids, wherein the isolated peptide has an amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4 when the isolated peptide is 24 amino acids long and the isolated peptide comprises a portion of SEQ ID NO: 4 including at least PYFAGCL SEQ ID NO: 86, when the isolated peptide includes 19 amino acids or less, and wherein said peptide induces or increases competence in a S. thermophilus strain.

11. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide includes at most 18.

12. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 23 amino acids.

13. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 22 amino acids.

14. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 21 amino acids.

15. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 20 amino acids.

16. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 19 amino acids.

17. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 18 amino acids.

18. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 17 amino acids.

19. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 16 amino acids.

20. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 15 amino acids.

21. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 14 amino acids.

22. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 13 amino acids.

23. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 12 amino acids.

24. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 11 amino acids.

25. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 10 amino acids.

26. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 9 amino acids.

27. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide contains at most 8 amino acids.

28. The isolated peptide according to claim 1 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 7 amino acids.

29. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 17 amino acids.

30. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 16 amino acids.

31. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 15 amino acids.

32. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 14 amino acids.

33. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 13 amino acids.

34. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 12 amino acids.

35. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 11 amino acids.

36. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 10 amino acids.

37. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 9 amino acids.

38. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 8 amino acids.

39. The isolated peptide according to claim 10 , wherein said isolated peptide consists of 7 amino acids.

40. A kit-of-parts comprising:

a bacterium belonging to the Streptococcus genus in a first part; and

in a second part, the peptide according to claim 1 .

41. A method for inducing and/or increasing competence in a bacterium belonging to the Streptococcus genus, wherein said bacterium is incubated in a medium comprising a peptide according to claim 1 .
