Abstract

The present invention provides a method for producing Cu67 radioisotope suitable for use in medical applications. The method comprises irradiating a metallic zinc-68 (Zn68) target within a sealed ceramic capsule with a high energy gamma ray beam. After irradiation, the Cu67 is isolated from the Zn68 by any suitable method (e.g. chemical and or physical separation). In a preferred embodiment, the Cu67 is isolated by sublimation of the zinc in a ceramic sublimation tube to afford a copper residue containing Cu67. The Cu67 can be further purified by chemical means.

Claims (13)

1. A method for producing Cu67 radioisotope comprising

irradiating a metallic Zn68 target ingot, contained within a sealed capsule and in intimate contact therewith, with a high energy gamma ray beam to convert at least a portion of the Zn68 to Cu67, and then isolating Cu67 from the irradiated target; wherein the capsule is composed of alumina; and the Zn68 is substantially free of traces of residual oxygen that interfere with contact of the Zn68 to the capsule, and wherein isolating Cu67 comprises subliming away zinc from the irradiated target ingot at an elevated temperature onto a sublimation tube to leave substantially zinc-free metallic residue containing Cu67 in the capsule, wherein the sublimation tube is composed of alumina, and further comprising recovering the sublimed Zn68 from the sublimation tube by inverting the sublimation tube containing the sublimed Zn68 over a graphite hopper containing a substantially empty alumina capsule; placing the inverted sublimation tube and hopper containing the substantially empty capsule inside a hermetic surround with an inert gas fill; and heating at least a portion of the hermetic surround so that the Zn68 melts and is directed into the empty capsule.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the zinc is sublimed at a temperature in the range of about 500 to about 700° C. at a pressure in the range of about 10-5 to about 10-3 Torr.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reacting the metallic residue within the capsule with an aqueous acid for separation of the Cu67 ions from any zinc that remained in the capsule after subliming the zinc.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising removing the remaining zinc from the Cu67 ions by anion exchange.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising repeating the step of irradiating the deposited Zn68 within the sealed capsule with a high energy gamma ray beam to convert at least a portion of the Zn68 to Cu67, and then isolating Cu67 from the irradiated target.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the capsule is sealed within a target body comprising a cage body coupled to a screw-on cap to form a substantially water-tight seal over the capsule wherein the target body further comprises a lid attached to the capsule with a graphite gasket positioned between the lid and the capsule to aid in creating the water-tight seal.

7. A method for producing Cu67 radioisotope comprising casting molten Zn68 into a capsule, cooling the Zn68 to form a solid metallic Zn68 target ingot within and intimately contacting the capsule, hermetically sealing the capsule, irradiating the metallic Zn68 target ingot, sealed within the capsule, with a high energy gamma ray beam to convert at least a portion of the Zn68 to Cu67, and then isolating Cu67 from the irradiated target; wherein the capsule is composed of alumina; and the Zn68 ingot is substantially free of traces of residual oxygen that interfere with contact of the Zn68 to the capsule, and wherein isolating Cu67 comprises subliming away zinc from the irradiated target ingot at an elevated temperature onto a sublimation tube to leave substantially zinc-free metallic residue containing Cu67 in the capsule, wherein the sublimation tube is composed of alumina, and further comprising recovering the sublimed Zn68 from the sublimation tube by inverting the sublimation tube containing the sublimed Zn68 over a graphite hopper containing a substantially empty alumina capsule; placing the inverted sublimation tube and hopper containing the substantially empty capsule inside a hermetic surround with an inert gas fill; and heating at least a portion of the hermetic surround so that the Zn68 melts and is directed into the empty capsule.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the zinc is sublimed at a temperature in the range of about 500 to about 700° C. at a pressure in the range of about 10-5 to about 10-3 Torr.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising reacting the metallic residue within the capsule with an aqueous acid for separation of the Cu67 ions from any zinc that remained in the capsule after subliming the zinc.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising removing the remaining zinc from the Cu67 ions by anion exchange.

11. The method of claim 7 , further comprising repeating the step of irradiating the deposited Zn68 within the sealed capsule with a high energy gamma ray beam to convert at least a portion of the Zn68 to Cu67, and then isolating Cu67 from the irradiated target.

12. The method of claim 7 wherein the capsule is sealed within a target body comprising a cage body coupled to a screw-on cap to form a substantially water-tight seal over the capsule wherein the target body further comprises a lid attached to the capsule with a graphite gasket positioned between the lid and the capsule to aid in creating the water-tight seal.
