Abstract

A system for remotely controlling the positioning within the body of a patient of an elongated medical device optionally having a control handle, comprises a catheter position system and a remote controller configured to control the robotic device. The catheter position system includes a handle controller; a sled member coupled to the handle controller, the sled member being configured to position the medical device within the body of the patient; and a sled base configured to advance the sled member towards the body of a patient, the sled bed being coupled to a sterile barrier effective to maintain sterility inside the sled base. The catheter position system may include a control system configured to issue positioning commands in response to sensor signals received from the catheter. The catheter position system may also include a motor driven rotatable catheter introducer clamp configured to enable rotation of an introducer.

Claims (21)

1. A system for remotely controlling a catheter having a proximal portion opposed to a distal end, the system comprising:

a catheter positioning system comprising:

a modular plate configured to receive the proximal portion of the catheter;

a sled member coupled to the modular plate; and

a sled base configured to advance the sled member along a guide towards a body of a patient;

a longitudinally-extending sterile barrier configured to be positioned on the sled base, wherein a longitudinally-extending recess in an upper surface of the longitudinally-extending sterile barrier is dimensioned to accept the catheter, wherein the longitudinally-extending sterile barrier includes dual flexible liner elements extending toward one another from opposed sides of the longitudinally-extending recess and the longitudinally-extending sterile barrier is configured to allow the catheter to be pressed there between into the longitudinally-extending recess and slid there between along the longitudinally-extending recess;

a control system configured to receive at least one signal from a sensor on the distal end of the catheter and automatically provide control commands to the catheter positioning system based on the at least one signal; and

a remote controller configured to receive user input and send input commands to the control system.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control commands are based on signals corresponding to at least one of a contact force, a direction of the contact force, and a tip stability parameter.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control commands are based on signals corresponding to at least one of a temperature at the catheter tip, an impedance of the catheter, instantaneous power, a respiratory rate and a heart rate.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to automatically provide at least one control command when a received signal exceeds a predetermined range.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the control system is configured such that the predetermined range is input by a user.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to maintain a constant integral over time of contact force and ablation power level.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to control a position of catheter in response to tip bend signals received from the catheter in order to maintain a portion of the catheter substantially perpendicular to an ablation site.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular plate is configured to receive sensor signals from a catheter handle and conduct the sensor signals to the sled member.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to record movement and positioning of the catheter.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured with preset programs for controlling a catheter.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to control a position of the catheter in response to receiving a patient physiological signal in anticipation of movement of tissues.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the received patient physiological signal comprises one or more of electrophysiology signals, electrocardiogram signals, ultrasound measurements, and pulse sensor signals.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control system is configured to automatically refine an algorithm used to anticipate the movement of the tissues in response to the received patient physiological signal based on sensor signals received from the sensor on the distal end of the catheter.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to control a position of a catheter by predicting movement of tissues within the patient based upon observations of tissue movements over a period of time.
