Topical skin care formulations comprising plant extracts
Disclosed are compositions and corresponding methods of their use that include plant, plant parts, or extracts thereof from Michelia magnifica, Xylosma japonicum, Prunus cerasifera, Nyssa sinensis, Chimonanthus praecox, Sassafras tzumu, Inula helianthus - aquatica, Capparis bodinieri, Passiflora caerulea, Galium aparine, Boehmeria platyphylla, Colquhounia coccinea, Sageretia rugosa, Jasminum stephanense, Antirrhinum majus, Daphniphyllum oldhamii, Cuscuta chinensis, Salix variegate, Osmanthus parvifolius, Euphorbia trigona, Calliandra haematocephala, Excoecaria acerifolia, Dianthus chinensis, Myriophyllum spicatum, Nymphoides peltatum, Prunus salicina, Solanum coagulans, Elaeis guineensis, Rhododendron moulmainense, Spatholobus suberectus, Artabotrys hexapetalus, Hibiscus syriacus, Lonicera calcarata, Hydnocarpus hainanensis, Ilex fragilis, Antidesma venosum, Acacia pennata ssp. Kerrii, Althaea rosea, Millettia velutina, Themeda japonica, Dalbergia hancei, Ipomoea batatas, Photinia glomerate, Hippophae rhamnoides, Azadirachta indica, Karelinia caspica, Bauhinia touranensis, Eriobotrya japonicas, Anaphalis contorta , and/or Cratoxylum prunifolium , or any combination thereof.
1. A topical skin composition comprising:
(a) a first MMP-1 inhibitor, wherein said first inhibitor is an aqueous extract from Boehmeria platyphylla;
(b) a second MMP-1 inhibitor, wherein said second inhibitor is an aqueous extract from Cratoxylum prunifolium ; and
(c) a third MMP-1 inhibitor, wherein said third inhibitor is an aqueous extract from Excoecaria acerifolia.
2. The topical skin composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an emulsion, cream, lotion, or solution.

The topical skin composition of claim 2 , wherein the composition includes from about 0.001% to about 5% by weight of said aqueous extract from Boehmeria platyphylla , from about 0.001% to about 5% by weight of said aqueous extract from Cratoxylum prunifolium , and from about 0.001% to about 5% by weight of said aqueous extract from Excoecaria acerifolia.
4. The topical skin composition of claim 3 , wherein the composition comprises a moisturization agent, an antioxidant, a structuring or thickening agent, and an emulsifier.
5. The topical skin composition of claim 4 , wherein the composition further includes a silicone containing compound.
6. The topical skin composition of claim 5 , wherein the composition further includes a sunscreen agent.
7. The topical skin composition of claim 1 , wherein each of said aqueous extracts are obtained from the whole plant of Boehmeria platyphylla, Cratoxylum prunifolium , and Excoecaria acerifolia , respectively.
8. The topical skin composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a cleanser product, a toner product, a moisturizer product, or a mask product.
9. The topical skin composition of claim 1 , wherein said first MMP-1 inhibitor is also an antioxidant, a TNF-α inhibitor, and a lipoxygenase inhibitor, wherein said second MMP-1 inhibitor is also an antioxidant, and wherein said third MMP-1 inhibitor is also an antioxidant and a lipoxygenase inhibitor.
10. A method of treating skin comprising topically applying the composition of claim 1 to skin in need thereof, wherein topical application of said composition treats said skin.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition inhibits MMP-1 activity and lipoxygenase activity in said skin.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition is applied to a fine line or wrinkle.
13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition inhibits TNF-α activity in said skin.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the composition is applied to erythemic or inflamed skin.
15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition reduces oxidative damage in skin cells.
16. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of said aqueous extracts are obtained from the whole plant of Boehmeria platyphylla, Cratoxylum prunifolium , and Excoecaria acerifolia , respectively.
