Abstract

An instrument including an end effector at a distal end; an actuator mechanism at a proximal end, the actuator mechanism including a first valve, a robotic control coupled to the first valve, and a manual control coupled to the first valve is provided. The instrument may further include a transport shaft between the actuator mechanism and the end effector, the transport shaft including a cavity, coupled to the first valve, facilitating material transport along the transport shaft, the first valve having an actuating axis perpendicular to a rotational axis of the robotic control. A method for using an instrument as above is also provided.

Claims (41)

1. An instrument comprising:

an end effector at a distal end of the instrument;

an actuator mechanism at a proximal end of the instrument, the actuator mechanism including:

a chassis that is detachably couplable to a support platform along a first plane,

a first valve having a first valve channel,

a robotic control coupled to the first valve and configured to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the first plane, and

a manual control coupled to the first valve; and

a transport shaft between the actuator mechanism and the end effector, the transport shaft including a cavity extending through the transport shaft, coupled to the first valve channel, that transports material along the transport shaft, the first valve having an actuating axis perpendicular to a rotational axis of the robotic control, the first valve channel and the cavity forming a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.

2. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the actuating axis of the first valve comprises a linear plunger mechanism.

3. The instrument of claim 1 further comprising a flexible wrist attached between the transport shaft and the end effector.

4. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the actuator mechanism comprises a plurality of movable shafts, each of the plurality of movable shafts being coupled to receive an external force through a corresponding movable disk coupled to the robotic control.

5. The instrument of claim 4 wherein the first valve is coupled to a first movable shaft of the plurality of movable shafts in the actuator mechanism.

6. The instrument of claim 5 wherein the actuator mechanism further comprises:

a second valve coupled to a second movable shaft of the plurality of movable shafts in the actuator mechanism, wherein the second valve comprises a second valve channel coupled to the cavity.

7. The instrument of claim 6 wherein the cavity comprises:

a first aperture formed in a valve body and coupled to the first valve channel of the first valve; and

a second aperture formed in the valve body and coupled to the second valve channel of the second valve formed in the valve body;

wherein:

the first valve channel is coupled to an irrigation source, and

the second valve channel is coupled to a suction source.

8. The instrument of claim 7 wherein the first aperture and the second aperture connect the first valve channel and the second valve channel to the cavity at locations along a longitudinal axis of the cavity that are separate from one another.

9. The instrument of claim 7 wherein the cavity further comprises a third aperture coupled to an auxiliary channel, the third aperture and the auxiliary channel being collinear with a longitudinal axis of the transport shaft.

10. The instrument of claim 6 wherein the second valve has an actuating axis perpendicular to the rotational axis of the robotic control.

11. The instrument of claim 6 wherein the first valve channel and the second valve channel are aligned in the second plane.

12. The instrument of claim 6 wherein the first valve channel and the second valve channel are parallel to each other and are angled with respect to a longitudinal axis of the cavity.

13. The instrument of claim 4 wherein the robotic control comprises a robotic actuation piece having a rack gear coupled to one of the plurality of movable shafts, wherein the rack gear translates in a first direction.

14. The instrument of claim 13 wherein the manual control includes a push button that translates in the first direction.

15. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the first valve is a piston-type valve.

16. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the first valve comprises a coil spring that urges the first valve closed.

17. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the first valve channel forms an acute angle with the cavity.

18. A medical instrument comprising:

an end effector at a distal end of the medical instrument;

an actuator mechanism at a proximal end of the medical instrument, the actuator mechanism being detachably couplable to a support platform along a first plane, the actuator mechanism including a first valve having a first valve channel, a second valve having a second valve channel, a robotic control coupled to the first valve and having a rotational axis perpendicular to the first plane, and a manual control coupled to the first valve; and

a transport shaft between the actuator mechanism and the end effector, the transport shaft including a cavity, coupled to the first valve channel and the second valve channel, that transports material along the transport shaft;

wherein the first valve has an actuating axis perpendicular to the rotational axis of the robotic control;

wherein the first valve channel and the second valve channel couple to the cavity at different locations along a longitudinal axis of the cavity; and

wherein the first valve channel, the second valve channel, and the cavity define a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.

19. The medical instrument of claim 18 wherein the second valve has an actuating axis perpendicular to the rotational axis of the robotic control.

20. The medical instrument of claim 18 wherein:
