Abstract

Highly compactable granulations and methods for preparing highly compactable granulations are disclosed. More particularly, highly compactable calcium carbonate granulations are disclosed. The granulations comprise powdered materials such as calcium carbonate that have small median particle sizes. The disclosed granulations are useful in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical tableting and provide smaller tablet sizes upon compression than previously available.

Claims (15)

1. A method of making a high density calcium carbonate granulation for compression into a swallowable dietary supplement tablet comprising mixing a USP or food grade calcium carbonate powder having a packed density of 1.1 to 1.5 g/cm 3 with a binding agent and water; and drying the resultant mixture in a fluidized bed to a water content of less than about 1% by weight, thereby resulting in a calcium carbonate granulation that is highly compactable and has a tap density between about 0.9 g/cm 3 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the calcium carbonate powder has a packed density of about 1.2 g/cm 3 .

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the calcium carbonate powder has a packed density of about 1.1 g/cm 3 .

4. A method of claim 1 further comprising the step of compressing said granulation into a swallowable dietary supplement tablet.

5. A method of claim 1 , wherein the calcium carbonate powder has a packed density of about 1.3 g/cm 3 .

6. A method of claim 1 , wherein the calcium carbonate powder has a packed density of about 1.5 g/cm 3 .

7. A method of claim 1 , wherein the granulation has a tap density between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

8. A method of claim 1 , wherein the granulation has a tap density between about 1.1 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

9. A method of claim 1 , wherein the granulation has a tap density between about 1.3 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

10. A method of claim 1 , wherein the binding agent is maltodextrin and wherein said granulation comprises between about 2% and about 10% maltodextrin by weight.

11. A method of claim 10 , wherein said granulation comprises more than 90% by weight calcium carbonate and between about 2% and about 5% maltodextrin by weight.

12. A method of claim 1 , wherein said mixing comprises mixing under shear.

13. A method of claim 12 , wherein said mixing under shear is carried out with an impeller blade operating at from about 200 to about 300 rpm.

14. A method of claim 1 , wherein said calcium carbonate powder has a median particle diameter from about 0.1 μm to about 20 μm.

15. A calcium carbonate granulation prepared by the method of claim 1 .
