Abstract

The subject invention is drawn to ellagitannin metabolites (e.g., urolithin) that find use in treating or preventing a neoplastic disease in a subject.

Claims (25)

1. A method of treating cancer in a subject, said method comprising:

administering to said subject an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of urolithin B, urolithin A, methyl-urolithin A, hydroxyl-urolithin A, and a compound represented by the structure:

wherein

R 1 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH, and OR 3 ;

R 2 is H or C 1 -C 6 alkyl; and

R 3 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl;

wherein said cancer is selected from the group consisting of a sarcoma, a melanoma, a squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, throat, larynx, or lung, a genitourinary cancer selected from cervical or bladder cancer, a hematopoietic cancer, a head and neck cancer, a nervous system cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colon cancer.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said cancer is one of prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, or colon cancer.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said cancer is prostate cancer; and said prostate cancer is androgen independent.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said compound is selected from the group consisting of: urolithin B, urolithin A, hydroxyl-urolithin A, and methyl-urolithin A.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said subject is a mammal.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein said mammal is a human.

7. The method according to claim 4 , wherein said subject is a human.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said cancer is a hematopoietic cancer.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein said hematopoietic cancer is selected from the group consisting of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and a leukemia.

10. A method of treating a carcinoma of a solid tissue in a subject, said method comprising:

administering to said subject an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of urolithin B, urolithin A, methyl-urolithin A, hydroxyl-urolithin A, and a compound represented by the structure:

wherein

R 1 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH, and OR 3 ;

R 2 is H or C 1 -C 6 alkyl; and

R3 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said compound is selected from the group consisting of: urolithin B, urolithin A, hydroxyl-urolithin A, and methyl-urolithin A.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said subject is a mammal.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein said mammal is a human.

14. The method according to claim 11 , wherein said subject is a human.
